Role summary
This role involves providing specialist dietetic assessment and intervention for children and young people across various settings, supporting families to achieve optimal nutritional outcomes. You will manage a diverse caseload including home enteral feeding, general paediatric inpatients and outpatients, and conditions like allergies and faltering growth. The position offers opportunities to contribute to service development, support team members and students, and engage in multidisciplinary team working.
Key responsibilities
- Provide specialist dietetic assessment and intervention for children and young people.
- Support families to achieve optimal nutritional outcomes.
- Manage a diverse caseload including home enteral feeding, general paediatric in and out patients, and various conditions.
- Work closely within a multidisciplinary environment alongside Consultants, Nurses, and other professionals.
- Take an active role in supporting the student training programme.
Essential criteria
- Relevant Degree/Diploma
- Registered with the HCPC
- Successful completion of post graduate paediatric training e.g. BDA paediatric modules (or willing to complete)
- Behavioural change training/motivational interviewing skills
- Evidence of up to date best practice in specialism, self directed and reflective practice
- Clinical supervisory skills training and regular involvement in student training and assessment
- Attendance at relevant specialist interest groups
- Recent advanced post graduate experience to assess and treat in a wide range of areas of nutritional support in the NHS
- Recent experience of paediatric dietetics
- Demonstrates knowledge of common conditions and dietetic intervention
- Sound knowledge of clinical dietetics including anthropometric measurement, biochemical interpretation and devising complex nutritional care plans
- Evidence of developing others
- Ability to work with and motivate children, parents and carers (frequently dealing with challenging behaviour and family dynamics)
- Able to produce accurate and timely reports
- Awareness of relevant legislation, NSF's, local and national initiatives and their relevance to paediatric dietetic practice
- Good clinical reasoning skills
- Understanding of clinical governance
- Critical appraisal skills
- Ability to maintain legible and accurate records
- Teaching/presentation skills
- Demonstrates positive attitude and behaviours
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with people with complex difficulties and in difficult situations

Desirable criteria
- Member of Professional Body
- Studied at Masters level or equivalent
- Relevant accredited post graduate training

- Previous experience working at a Band 6 level
- Previous experience of working with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Experience in contributing to service improvements e.g audit, patient information
- Experience in dealing with complaints (e.g. diffusing or investigating complaints)
