Role summary
This role is for a Senior Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department at Royal Stoke Hospital, with potential rotation to the County site. The successful candidate will assist in managing the Blood Transfusion service, providing expert knowledge, supervising staff, and developing Standard Operating Procedures. It requires full HCPC registration, an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/Transfusion or equivalent, and an MSc, Higher Specialist Diploma, or equivalent in biomedical science with additional specialist blood transfusion knowledge.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in the management of the Blood Transfusion service.
- Provide expert knowledge in the Blood Transfusion area.
- Manage staff within the department.
- Train staff.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Essential criteria
- BSc, Registration and Specialist
- MSc, HSD or alternative
- Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
- Knowledge of relevant laboratory data management systems and policies. Understands the importance of data integrity and confidentiality
- Evidence of BT specialist knowledge
- A minimum of 5 years post-registration practical experience of working in relevant Pathology discipline in a busy laboratory environment.
- oOne or more sub-specialised analytical or clinical areas
- oSupervising / managing staff.
- oTraining a range of 'students' e.g. medical , scientific and support staff
- oPathology IT systems
- oWorking with complex and specialist laboratory equipment.
- oActive liaison with clinicians and healthcare professionals.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
- oEffectively apply skills and knowledge oWork with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review and
- oWork within safe systems of work and report any deficiencies in those systems.
- Professional personal presentation and manner.
- Positive attitude and flexible
- Must participate in the required rota pattern for the department.
- Prepared to work flexibly, including participating out of routine hours service arrangements when required to do so.
- Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary).
- Ability and willingness to fulfil the travel requirements of the post if/as relevant - primary place of work as per JD but occasionally may be reasonably asked to work at another site where the Trust has responsibility for Pathology Services.
Desirable criteria
- Attended formal management course
- Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust
- Experience in presenting data to clinical and scientific audiences in a range of formats.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective Pathology networks with internal and external colleagues.
