Role summary
This role is for an Assistant Psychologist to join the Intensive Support Function team, supporting children and young people with Autism and/or Learning Disabilities who are at risk of placement breakdown or hospital admission. The successful candidate will gain experience in assessment, formulation, and interventions, particularly with adapted approaches and systemic thinking. They will work under the supervision of a Principal Clinical Psychologist and contribute to service development and research.
Essential criteria
- Good honours degree in Psychology (2.1 or above). Eligibility for Graduate Membership of BPS
- To undertake breakaway training or equivalent following appointment

- Advanced keyboard skills
- Other related academic qualifications to Masters or Doctorate level.
- Knowledge and Expertise
- The ability to communicate complex/ sensitive information where barriers to understanding exist. For example, instances requiring empathy and reassurance.
- The ability to make judgements involving a range of facts or situations requiring analysis or comparison of a range of options. Also skills for assessing children/young people in one-to-one sessions, group dynamics or who are participating in research.
- The ability to organise straightforward tasks, activities or programmes, some of which may be ongoing. Also, the ability to plan and prioritises own workload, research programme activities; group sessions, etc.
- Working to Professional Guidelines.
- Must be capable of working within guidelines; receives regular supervision/ direction
- Ability to use routinely available spreadsheet/database software (Excel, Access, etc.)
- Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books
- Demonstrable relevant work experience or knowledge of working with children young people or adults with learning disabilities and/or autism,.
- Relevant work experience of adolescents with learning disabilities/ mental health problems
- Desire to progress to Clinical Training (DClinPsy)

Job summary
We are seeking two full time ambitious Assistant Psychologist (AP) to join our Intensive Support Function team, who is aspiring to gain knowledge and support children, young people and families accessing our service. Our service supports children and young people who have a formal Autism and or Learning Disability Diagnosis who are at risk of placement breakdown or admission to a mental health hospital. You would be joining a supportive, mixed and skilled team and working under the supervision of a Principal Clinical Psychologist.
This is an exciting post where you would gain experience in assessment, formulation and interventions and in particular with adapted approaches and systemic thinking. We have a team highly skilled in positive behavioural support and ample opportunity for gaining good experience in this field. There would also be supporting the teams service development and research/audit experience.
You would be supported to ensure your CPD time and be active within our trust-wide AP development group. We regularly have trainee clinical psychologists within the team which can be beneficial and inspiring to work together.
