Role summary
This is a fixed-term Healthcare Support Worker position for 12 months, covering maternity leave on Private Care Granard House 1 Ward at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves supporting the delivery of high-quality patient-centred care to individuals undergoing complex cancer treatments and surgical procedures. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will assist registered nurses in providing safe, compassionate, and effective care in a specialist oncology and surgical ward environment. Previous experience in an acute hospital setting is essential, with oncology or surgical care experience being advantageous.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out nursing care for patients as drawn up by the shift co-ordinator.
- Develop awareness and understanding of the needs of cancer patients and treatment modalities.
- Work with the nursing team to maintain an efficient, safe, clean, and pleasant environment for patients.
- Undertake and practice the Care Certificate standards.
- Monitor and record patients' vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and report abnormal results.
- Measure and record patients' height and weight.
Essential criteria
- Completed Care Certificate
- Demonstrable experience of working in a healthcare setting.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting for a duration long enough to have obtained relevant competencies for a Band 3 position.
- Experience of working with computers (keyboard skills, data entry)
- Clinical skills (e.g. phlebotomy etc.)
- Evidence of effective interpersonal skills
- Evidence of good organisational skills
- Self-motivated to work under minimal supervision
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Good communication skills, written and verbal
- Patience and understanding of patient's needs
- Ability to remain calm and demonstrate tact and diplomacy whilst under pressure
- Evidence of commitment to customer care initiatives
- Awareness of the importance of patient confidentiality
- Literacy and numeracy skills
- Awareness of health and safety at work (e.g. Manual Handling skills, Infection Control measures)
- Ability to use own initiative
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g. shift work)
- Able to work on both sites and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role
Desirable criteria
- NVQ in Health and Social Care Level 2, working towards Level 3
- Experience of working with oncology patients
- Understanding of working with patients who are critically and chronically ill
