Role summary
This role is for an experienced Fitness Instructor to join the Airedale Active Together Programme, a cancer prehabilitation and rehabilitation service. The post holder will deliver the physical activity component, including leading group exercise sessions, providing one-to-one support, and conducting clinical assessments. The position involves working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to support patients through their cancer journey. Daily access to a car is required for this role based at Skipton Hospital.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver prehabilitation and rehabilitation under Physiotherapist guidance for people living with and beyond cancer.
- Manage a caseload across all stages of the cancer pathway and contribute to MDT meetings.
- Complete administrative duties, including accurate recording, monitoring, and auditing of assessments and outcomes.
- Deliver physical activity programmes (1:1 and group) across multiple sites for oncology patients.
- Monitor patient progress, adapt programmes for safe care, and promote healthy living and behaviour change.
- Work collaboratively with patients, carers, the MDT, and external partners, communicating complex information empathetically.
Essential criteria
- Level 3 Diploma in exercise referral (CIMSPA accredited)
- Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation or willingness to work towards this.
- Specialist Exercise Instructor Level 4 qualification in chronic conditions e.g. Diabetes, Obesity.
- Recent, relevant experience of working in the leisure/ fitness sector with a range of clients including those on an exercise referral scheme
- Experience of delivering community-based exercise or rehabilitation in both one to one and group settings.
- Experience of working with people with complex health needs and the impact this can have on exercise
- Knowledge and understanding of goal setting principles
- Understanding of the role of prehabilitation and rehabilitation within Cancer services.
- Able to recognise when guidance and support is required and initiate appropriate escalation processes
- Knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the principles of partnership working
- Knowledge of the impact illness and disability have on rehabilitation
- Communication and counselling skills, ability to convey sensitive information in an appropriate manner to patients/clients relative/ carers and the MDT
- Skills to cope with stressful situations, including emotional or aggressive patients and carers
- Planning and organisational skills and the ability to prioritise own workload and meet required timescales.
- Current UK driving license
- Access to own transport

Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Fitness Instructor to support the development, delivery, and ongoing improvement of the Airedale Active Together Programme.
Active Together is a multimodal oncology prehabilitation and rehabilitation service developed by the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) at Sheffield Hallam University and funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research. It aims to help people prepare for cancer treatment, recover more effectively, and maintain healthy lifestyles beyond diagnosis.
Reporting to the Service Therapy Manager and Lead Physiotherapist, the post holder will deliver the physical activity component of the programme, contributing to a high-quality, inclusive, multidisciplinary service.
Key responsibilities include leading group exercise sessions, delivering one-to-one support, carrying out clinical assessments, and completing administrative tasks. Collaborative working across the multidisciplinary team is essential.
Daily access to a car is required.
