Role summary
This Data Analyst role is within East Genomics, based at Cambridge University Hospitals, supporting genomic testing for a patient population of 9 million. The successful candidate will join a small team responsible for producing high-quality datasets to meet service objectives and financial targets. The role involves designing and developing laboratory datasets, providing analysis, and ensuring data quality. It requires experience in data engineering and analytics, with a focus on data quality, scalability, and reproducibility.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop laboratory datasets and reports, providing analysis and insights into their contents, and assuring their quality.
- Implement policies and processes for Cambridge Laboratory data analysis, working under the laboratory change management process.
- Collaborate with other data analysts in the region to share best practice and implement appropriate solutions to support operational management of the Cambridge Laboratory.
- Produce accurate, relevant and timely periodic reports for use by finance and senior management.
Essential criteria
- oDegree or equivalent professional qualification, or equivalent relevant experience
- oEvidence of continued development
- oProven experience working within an Information or analysis role
- oDetailed analysis & validation of various types of data to inform assessment of performance of complex organisations and to help identify opportunities for improvement
- oVery high level of computer literacy & technical competence - including understanding of a range of additional data analysis querying tools (e.g. Excel, PowerBI, SQL, SSRS, SSIS, Tableau, VBA etc.)
- oHigh level of computer literacy & technical competence - including strong knowledge of MS EXCEL, MS Access, SSMS and/or SQL
- oHigh level of numeracy with good problem solving and attention to detail
- oExcellent written and verbal communication skills
- oExcellent interpersonal and team working skills
- oExcellent organisational and planning skills
- oSet own priorities and develop work programmes for department
- oAbility to organise pieces of work involving input from other people, to ensure completion in a timely manner
- oAbility to communicate complex (potentially contentious or sensitive) analytical issues to data literate persons or groups at various levels
- oAble to interpret the client's needs, to ensure that the most appropriate data/information is provided
- oAbility to deal effectively with a range of queries from Directors, Managers, project leads and laboratory staff
- oInnovative thinker with the ability to identify and consider alternative ways of enabling data to be collected and presented where conventional options are not available
- oAbility to source data from a variety of sources
- oAble to act as an expert in field of data capture, manipulation and dissemination
- oAbility to manipulate data from a variety of sources and present in the most appropriate, understandable format (maps, charts, tables etc.).
- oAbility to analyse, interpret and present highly complex information from large data sets

Desirable criteria
- oDegree in relevant fields, e.g. informatics, analysis, statistics
- oDetailed knowledge and understanding of Health Informatics (including datasets utilised in genomic service management), data quality and data protection
- oExperience of using both quantitative and qualitative data to assess performance of complex organisations
- oExperience in a service improvement setting using a range of service improvement and quality management tools
- oExperience in an acute hospital setting and/or within the NHS
- oKnowledge of datasets in use within the Genomics field for data reporting, including PLCM, NRDS, Outcomes data
- oKnowledge of data standards used within Genomics and the NHS
- oGood working knowledge of Python/R for data manipulation, analysis, automation, and reporting.
