Role summary
This is a full-time opportunity for an Operational Manager to join the Laboratory Medicine directorate, which is part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) network. The role involves day-to-day management of administrative and clerical services, delivering financial, activity, and performance targets, and supporting services across the network. The successful candidate will lead on service redesign, involving staff and patients, and contribute to service development bids and IT implementation. This position is ideal for an experienced leader looking to develop skills and lead change within a transforming pathology service.
Key responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the SYBP Performance Lead to support the provision of high quality care.
- Deliver on financial, activity and performance targets and support teams across the network.
- Lead on service redesign, involving front-line staff and patients in delivering effective, efficient and timely services.
- Take responsibility for the delivery of activity, turnaround time, and performance targets, including regular activity modelling and capacity planning.
- Contribute to the production of service development bids, business cases and capital bids.
- Fully contribute during the implementation of IT development including Electronic Patient Record/EDMS and other T3 programmes.
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level or equivalent service experience at management level.
- Postgraduate diploma in management or equivalent level of knowledge and skills gained through a combination of post graduate study and/or experience plus relevant short courses.
- Maths and English language GCSE minimum Grade C/4.
- Demonstrative commitment to personal development.
- Previous managerial experience including knowledge of managing services, financial management, service and capacity planning and management of staff.
- Experience of implementing policy, service planning and development and writing business cases.
- Excellent spreadsheet and analytical skills, experience of manipulating complex data and presenting to a range of audiences.
- Ability to understand and explain financial and activity information.
- Analytical, resilient and creative person, who is able to work under their own initiative in order to meet challenging deadlines, comfortable with taking decisions, often under pressure.
- An open and honest approach, high levels of integrity.
- Highly developed leadership skills. Self-motivated and able to motivate others. Understands the importance of staff training/ development and possess excellent coaching and facilitating skills.
- Excellent written, spoke and presentational skills. Sound negotiator. Influential and has creditability in the clinical setting.
- Evidence of ability to work as a member of a team. Able to build effective working relationships. Able to handle and resolve conflict.
- Flexible attitude to working hours. Ability to deal with competing priorities and to organise self and team members to deliver outputs to multiple deadlines.

- Commitment to undertake ALL training requirements of the post.
Desirable criteria
- Formal project management qualification.
- Experience of mentoring, staff supervision and appraisals.
- Previous experience of pathology services.
- Experience of Risk Assessment, Audit and Clinical Governance.
- Experience of using Patient Centre, Electronic Staff record and other NHS information systems.
- Understanding of NHS policy and experience of delivering against current NHS targets.
