Role summary
This role is for a dynamic Bank Senior Orthopaedic Plaster Technician to join a dedicated team providing orthopaedic and trauma injury care. The successful candidate will be a proficient independent practitioner, capable of team leadership, and committed to continuous professional development. Key responsibilities include coordinating plaster clinics, providing specialist advice, and educating junior staff and other healthcare professionals. The role supports orthopaedic and fracture clinics, theatres, and the emergency department, requiring excellent prioritization and customer care skills.
Essential criteria
- Hold the BOA/RCN(SOTN) AOT British Casting Certificate
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Interpret X-rays

- Experience of working in a healthcare environment
- Experience of leading and supervising teams
- Proven competency and experience in the application of specialist casts and splints for upper and lower limb complaints incl. Total Contact, Hip and Shoulder Spicas CTEV (Ponseti) and hip spicas, frog casts and sarmiento
- Proven competency and experience of basic and complex wound care, sutures, dressings, and staples, Denham/Steinman pins and Kirschner wires and aseptic techniques
- Ability to understand complicated instructions both verbal and written
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrates good clinical knowledge
- Works effectively in a team environment and independently
- Effectively prioritises, plans and manages own and others, activities/tasks
- Have the underpinning knowledge and skills to mentor junior Plaster Room staff and teach Junior Drs, theatre and OPD staff
- Ability to use & keep up-to-date with a variety of electronic patient clinical management systems
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressurised situations
- Demonstrates compassion and empathy
- Self-motivated and can motivate and inspire others

- Professional presentation and communication style
- Able to discuss casting issues with all grades of medical staff

Job summary
We are looking for a dynamic Bank Orthopaedic Practitioner/plaster technicianto join our Team of talented, dedicated people committed to providing the very best in orthopaedic and orthopaedic trauma injury care.The plaster room is the central hub for the orthopaedic clinics and this role demands team leadership and a positive, innovative and forward-thinking individual. They must be a proficient independent practitioner as well as being able to work in a larger team. The plaster room supports orthopaedic and fracture clinics, theatres, ED and the wards to maintain a high standard of care.
At SWFT we support individual's development and this role requires applicants to demonstrate evidence of teaching and training others, with ideally a mentorship course. The role will involve working as part of an established and evolving team in the plaster room, educating the plaster technician trainees, other health care professionals and teaching on the in-house plaster course Modules.
The applicant will be expected to co-ordinate the plaster clinics, give specialist advice and deal with complex care requirements. Workloads can be challenging and physically demanding in the Plaster Room and the applicant must be able to prioritise, multitask and have excellent customer care in busy clinics dealing with adults and children.
