Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist to join the dynamic Neurosciences Physiotherapy team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves 9-month rotations in various neurosciences areas, including acute neurosciences, outpatient neuro physiotherapy, neuro REACT, community neurological conditions management, and inpatient neuro-rehabilitation. The successful candidate will develop specialist skills in assessing and treating acute and chronic neuro-disability patients within a specialist Neurosciences MDT, participating in training, clinical governance, and quality improvement activities. Proven experience in an acute hospital setting and with neurological conditions is essential.
Key responsibilities
- Join an established Neurosciences Physiotherapist team led by a Clinical Lead Physiotherapist.
- Develop specialist skills in the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic neuro-disability patients.
- Work as part of a specialist Neurosciences MDT.
- Be involved in therapy in-service training and education programmes.
- Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement activities.
- Work with patients with neurological conditions in a well-supported environment with a clear supervision structure.
Essential criteria
- Degree/ graduate diploma or equivalent in Physiotherapy
- Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a physiotherapist
- Certificated graduate courses or equivalent in-house training in clinical specialty areas
- Good understanding of relevant clinical guidelines
- Broad range of clinical experience at a Band 5 level or above
- Experience of working in an acute, hospital based setting, including working within an MDT
- Experience of working with patients with Neurological Conditions
- Presentations to a range of groups
- Supervision of more junior staff, assistants and/students
- Active participation in an audit or project work
- Evidence of CPD
- Able to work autonomously and use initiative
- Evidence of specialist clinical skills and core Physiotherapy skills
- Effective clinical reasoning skills
- Ability to reflect on and appraise own practice
- Effective verbal communication skills with a range of patients and healthcare professionals regarding complex and sensitive issues.
- Effective written communication skills
- Good presentation skills
- Able to manage clinical caseload and prioritise effectively
- Ability to work effectively within different teams both multi and uni-disciplinary
- Ability to manage own time & meet deadlines
- Ability to be proactive in service development
- Ability to critically evaluate current research & apply to own practice
- Ability to recognise unacceptable behaviour and act on this appropriately
- Computer literate, to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Strong interpersonal skills, including assertiveness
- Ability to negotiate
- Positive attitude to change; able to facilitate change within teams
- Self-motivated and able to motivate others
- Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust shared commitments
Desirable criteria
- Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
- Membership of special interest group
- Motivational Interviewing/ Behaviour Change training (CBT or facilitation skills)
- Experience of weekend working and emergency on-call working
