Role summary
This Medical Secretary role involves providing comprehensive secretarial and administrative support within the Neurology team. Key duties include managing patient pathways, processing clinical letters, performing data quality checks, and handling telephone enquiries. The post holder will work within multi-disciplinary teams and ensure accurate recording of patient data in line with NHS Referral to Treatment standards. Proofreading is an essential part of the role.
Key responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative services within the Neurology team.
- Manage patient pathways, process clinical letters, and perform data quality checks.
- Handle telephone answering and other general administrative duties.
- Ensure accurate recording of patient data in relation to National and Local RTT standards.
- Provide cross cover for colleagues, including processing referrals, monitoring RTT, and managing waiting lists.
- Act as the focal point of contact for information dissemination and enquiries for the medical team.

- Literacy and Numeracy
- Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing at a high level
- Experience of handing calls from professionals and the public
Desirable criteria
- Use of electronic systems, diaries, patient records, training
- Microsoft Office packages, including Excel and Power-point, internet, e-mail etc
- Knowledge of Patient Administration Systems (or equivalent system)
- Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality.
- Medical Terminology
- Up-to-date secretarial / administration experience
- Experience to prioritise and manage a diverse workload
- Previous Medical Secretarial Experience
- Educated to GCSE standard at grade C or above (or equivalent)
- An appropriate speed and accuracy of typing is required for this role and this will be assessed at interview
- GSCE IT at grade C or above, or ECDL

The Medical Secretary post holder will be responsible for the provision of comprehensive secretarial and administrative services within the Neurology team. They will work within multi-disciplinary teams and be responsible for the provision of a range of secretarial and administrative duties relating to patient pathway management, processing of clinical letters, data quality checks, telephone answering and other relevant general admin duties. Proof reading is an essential part of the role.
The post holder will work to NHS Referral to Treatment (RTT) ensuring patient data is accurately recorded in relation to National and Local RTT standards.
Candidates should be literate and numerate, with excellent organisational, time management, IT skills, the ability to work effectively as part of a team and to work without supervision.
