Role summary
This role involves providing care, support, advice, and education to children and young people with respiratory conditions like asthma and long-term ventilation in an acute setting. The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary respiratory team, supporting early discharge and managing patients in their homes. It requires cross-site working and involvement in the care of all patients under the Respiratory Nursing team. The role focuses on improving the management of long-term conditions through professional, high-quality patient care.
Key responsibilities
- Provide professional, high quality co-ordinated patient care to children & their families, aiming to improve the management of their long- term condition.
- Liaise with tertiary centres regarding shared-care patients on Long term ventilation (LTV).
- Review children and young people admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of asthma to support early discharge and reduce readmissions.
- Act as an expert resource providing sound clinical advice and judgement to patients, families, nurses, and doctors.
- Hold regular nurse-delivered clinics where patient assessments and treatment plans are completed.
- Develop, implement, monitor, and review the service against national, network, and local asthma audit recommendations and outcomes.
Essential criteria
- Registered Children's Nurse Masters or equivalent experience
- Relevant post basic course
- Possession of relevant degree
- Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development
- Leadership and Management development
- Previous experience within the speciality and HDU experience
- Experience with Non Invasive Ventilation CPAP
- For specialist areas able to demonstrate sound knowledge of patient group
- Experience of supervision of junior staff
- Understanding of the research processes within the children's environment
- Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints
- Experience of staff management and development
- Clinical supervision and mentoring
Desirable criteria
- Asthma Diploma
- Have an understanding of national practices and guidelines relating to asthma
- Practical experience and knowledge of asthma tests and interventions.
- Experience as Band 6/7 Nurse within Respiratory Medicine
