Role summary
This Physician's Assistant role supports junior doctors in delivering treatment to patients on Surgical wards at Watford General Hospital. The post holder will function at a higher competency level than other Health Care Support workers, providing a seamless service under close supervision. The role involves general and specific duties for a patient group, with local training and assessment provided. It is expected to develop through skill acquisition, with a Consultant Surgeon acting as a mentor for professional development.
Key responsibilities
- Attend ward rounds with consultant and middle grade doctors to identify and carry out tasks to support delivery of treatment such as phlebotomy, ordering of radiological investigations, insertion of intravenous cannulae, performing ECG recordings and organizing of specialist tests and/or referrals.
- Attend Board Rounds in order to identify and carry out relevant administrative tasks and to take daily handover of work for the day.
- To work flexibly to support the teams as they vary in numbers with rota commitments.
- To prioritise workload.
- Maintain clear handover information about the patients with whom they are involved.
- To work effectively as a team member.Take part in departmental teaching, governance and audit activities.
Essential criteria
- Foundation Degree Level or equivalent.
- Previous healthcare related experience
- Previous experience of working within a healthcare environment
- Additional expertise acquired through practice or training.
- Ability to function as an Physicians Assistant.
- Ability to undertake a range of diagnostic tests relevant to area of work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, report writing.
- Able to undertake detailed patient assessments within agreed protocols
- Able to plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
- Able to prioritise and organise own workload. Clerical and IT skills.
Desirable criteria
- Previous advanced keyboard skills.
