Role summary

Key responsibilities
- Primary screening and rapid review of liquid based cervical cytology preparations and reporting of negative and inadequate samples.
- Clerical procedures associated with liquid based cervical cytology, including sample registration and entering reports.
- Assisting in specimen reception by checking forms, retrieving and preparing vials for HPV testing.
- Performing routine technical procedures like operating processors, staining, and mounting.
- Participating in internal and external quality assessment, including the NHSCSP EQA scheme.
- Keeping up to date with NHSCSP documentation, health and safety, and Trust policies.
Essential criteria
- Completion of training programme for Cytology Screeners Relevant UK Screening Qualification
- Significant experience of primary screening of at least 3000 preparations per annum
- Participation in External Quality Assurance (EQA), including NHSCSP
- Communication skills, organisational skills
- Personal qualities required - motivation, initiative, effective team member, assertive, flexibility and the ability to maintain a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.

Job summary
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Cytology department was chosen in 2019 to be the provider of HPV primary testing for the East of England. This means that we are now testing up to 450,000 cervical screening samples per year for HPV using the high throughput Roche Cobas systems for patients across the East of England.
The laboratory also currently processes around 2,000 diagnostic cytology samples per year.
It is a very busy department, and is sited in modern, well-equipped accommodation at the Cotman Centre, on Colney Lane.

Main duties of the job
As post holder, your duties will include:
