Role summary

This role is for a Band 4 HPB Support Worker / Navigator within the Hepatobiliary Cancer Team. The post holder will coordinate the care and multi-disciplinary management of HPB Cancer patients, acting as a central point of contact for patients, families, and clinical teams. Responsibilities include administrative support, tracking investigations, booking appointments, and ensuring smooth patient journeys. The role requires excellent organisational, communication, and IT skills, with a focus on patient support and administrative duties.

Essential criteria

  • Must be prepared to work across different hospital sites.
  • Diploma level qualification or equivalent in relevant field/discipline
  • GCSE English and Mathematics or equivalent
  • ECDL or equivalent experience

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of continued role development
  • Willing to undertake Macmillan learning and development courses.
  • Basic counselling
  • NVQ in Care or similar
  • Relevant Health or Social Care experience
  • Experience of coaching/teaching patients and carers
  • Experience co-ordinating a patient workload.
  • Previous medical secretarial experience
  • Efficient in the use of Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and internet
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of person-centred care
  • Awareness of Improving Outcomes; A Strategy for Cancer and other national cancer policies
  • Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology
  • Understanding of Cancer Support and its role across the UK
  • Able to use own initiative and work without supervision

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Band 4 HPB Support Worker / Navigator to be involved as a key member of the Hepatobiliary Cancer Team in a co-ordinating the care and multi-disciplinary management of HPB Cancer patients.

The post holder will be an integral part of the Team, who assists, supports and co-ordinates the pathway for patients. A large part of the role is providing administrative and coordination support to patients, families, consultants, nurse specialists, and other staff involved in the pathway. The successful applicant will ensure the efficient channelling and close co-ordination of the patient follow up pathway.

The post holder will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, must be flexible in approach, able to exercise initiative and demonstrate a consistently high standard of professionalism, being aware of the need for confidentiality and integrity. The post holder will have excellent communication skills and be willing to undertake on-going training and development. In addition, the post holder will be able to signpost patients and carers to the relevant sources of support and information appropriate to their needs.
