Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Physician Associate to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics team. The role involves providing care for patients across wards, clinics, and theatres, working closely with consultants and registrars. The postholder will participate in all aspects of the patient pathway, perform delegated duties, and contribute to the department's virtual fracture clinic. The role also includes being second on call with registrars on a 1-9 week rota basis.
Key responsibilities
- Assess and examine acutely unwell medical patients, order appropriate investigations, interpret findings, and recommend treatment.
- Actively participate in daily consultant-led ward rounds, presenting and reviewing patients and documenting timely information.
- Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures such as venepuncture, cannulation, ABG sampling, ECG, catheterisation, NG tube insertion, fracture reduction, casting, and joint aspiration.
- Review, assess, and admit patients alongside the registrar during out-of-hours shifts in resus, A&E, and urgent care.
- Conduct virtual triage phone call clinics led by the on-call consultant and initiate referrals to other specialties as necessary.
- Support and contribute to timely discharge planning, including completing discharge summaries and optimising bed capacity.
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience
- Experience of working in an acute and demanding clinical setting.
- Ability to work cohesively within the multi-disciplinary team.
- BA/BS Degree prior to undertaking PA program
- PG Dip/Masters in Physician Associate Studies from a UK training programme
- Current and valid certification by the Physician Associate National Examination
- Member of the FPARCP and on the PAMVR at the time of commencing the post
- Awareness of current developments and initiatives in Orthopaedics.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and terminology.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrate interest in Orthopaedics.
- Experience of designing audit/projects and research.
- ILS/ALS certification

Job summary
- This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of Physician Associates providing care for patients admitted to Trauma and Orthopaedics.
- The postholder will be part of a team of PAs working across different areas in the department; wards, clinic, theatres, etc.
- They will be working closely with Consultant of the week, Registrars and Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellows responsible for patients on the ward, including both elective and trauma patients. Dedicated sessions for clinic and theatre work will also be developed for the post holder.
- The PA team also lead the departments virtual fracture clinic alongside the on callconsultant.The post holder will be required to provide assistance to the Consultant Surgeons and Specialist Registrars in the provision of high quality care within the department.
- They will be expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge, working within operating theatres, wards and outpatient clinics.
- The role involves being second on call with the registrars over night and weekend duties in a 1-9 week rota basis.
