Role summary
This role is for an Assistant Physicist within the Radiological Physics and Radiation Safety group. The post holder will contribute to medical physics services, focusing on the safe and optimal use of ionising radiation in diagnostic and interventional radiology. Responsibilities include performance testing of x-ray equipment, data analysis, fault investigation, optimisation, patient dosimetry, and involvement in radiation safety audits and computer programming. The role requires liaison with Radiology PACS and IT teams.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to medical physics services ensuring safe and optimal use of ionising radiation.
- Perform performance testing of x-ray imaging and associated equipment both on and off-site.
- Conduct data analysis, investigate faults, and assist with optimisation and patient dosimetry.
- Participate in radiation safety audits, surveys, and risk assessments.
- Be involved in computer programming and software development related to the team's work.
- Liaise closely with the Radiology PACS team and trust IT team for routine testing of radiology reporting workstations.
Essential criteria
- Honours degree (First or 2:1) or equivalent in physics or containing a major physics component; OR Honours degree (2:2) or equivalent in physics or containing a major physics component, plus a relevant MSc or higher degree or equivalent level of knowledge in medical or radiation physics
- Project work involving extensive measurement and analysis of data
- Able to prioritise and manage own workload with effective time management skills
- Analytical problem solving abilities
- Diligent and attentive to detail
- Good verbal and written communication abilities, including the ability to communicate across professions
- IT literate and competent in the use of Excel, Word and Powerpoint
- High degree of physical accuracy and dexterity for making precision measurements
- Able to lift and move medium/heavy weights e.g. X-ray test equipment
- Demonstrates a keen interest and commitment to the application of science to clinical care of patients in a clinical environment
- Demonstrates the values and principles of the NHS Constitution with a focus on patient centred care
- Ability to be flexible and adaptive and to show initiative
- Ability to work effectively within a team both within the department and in the wider clinical context
- Ability to undertake innovative work
- Ability to maintain frequent periods of concentration in a busy environment
- Self motivated, organised and able to work to deadlines
- Ability to travel between sites with test equipment , that can be heavy and bulky, in a timely manner

Job summary
The Radiological Physics and Radiation Safety group provides medical physics services to departments using x-ray radiation, with the aim of ensuring the safe and optimal use of ionising radiation in all diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures. The post holder will contribute to many aspects of the Group's work which includes performance testing of x-ray imaging and associated equipment both on and off-site, data analysis, investigating faults, optimisation, and patient dosimetry.
Thepost holder will also be involved in radiation safety audits and surveys, and risk assessment. The post holder will be involved in computer programming and software development related to the work of the team. They will also liaise closely with the Radiology PACS team and the trust IT team and be directly involved in the routine testing of radiology reporting workstations.

The post would suit someone with a physics background who can demonstrate personal initiative, flexibility, team working skills and an enthusiasm for the application of science to the clinical environment.
