The Blood Sciences Department at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Higher Healthcare Science Support Worker. This role involves rotation through Specimen Reception, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, and Blood Transfusion. Key duties include specimen handling, operating lab equipment, performing quality assurance, and stock control. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
Key responsibilities
- Receiving, checking, prioritising and preparing specimens.
- Maintaining and operating automated and semi-automated equipment.
- Performing and reporting external quality assurance.
- Carrying out audits.
- Stock control.
- Analysing specimens under the supervision of a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
Essential criteria
- 5 GCSE or equivalent
- Significant experience gained in a modern Blood Sciences laboratory
- IT literate with good keyboard skills
- Good written English skills, with ability to convey all relevant information concisely
- An understanding of good laboratory practice and health and safety
Desirable criteria
- GCSEs at grade A-C in English, mathematics and a science subject
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a relevant science subject
- Institute of Biomedical Sciences Support Staff Certificate of Achievement Level 1
- Experience of using a laboratory information management system
- Experience using automated and semi-automated laboratory analysers

Job summary
The Blood Sciences Department at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated Higher Healthcare Science Support Worker to join our team.The successful candidate will be based within the main Blood Sciences laboratory at Arrowe Park Hospital but will be required to cover the satellite laboratory based at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre when necessary.
The successful applicant must have good interpersonal and communication skills. High levels of concentration and attention to detail are required. Good time management skills and the ability to work well under minimal supervision are essential.
Main duties of the job
