Role summary
This role involves providing expert specialist nursing services for adults with epilepsy across Cumbria. The post holder will develop and manage nurse-led clinics, offering advice and support to patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals. They will ensure high-quality, evidence-based care, assessing patient needs and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The aim is to promote good practice in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of epilepsy.
Key responsibilities
- Provide and manage an expert specialist nursing service for adults with epilepsy.
- Develop, organise and manage the provision of nurse led clinics for adults with epilepsy across Cumbria.
- Provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals.
- Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence based nursing care.
- Assess health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care.
Essential criteria
- NMC Level 1 or Level 15 Registered Nurse
- Higher Degree (MSc) or equivalent in a health related subject, or working towards.
- Strong leadership skills
- Knowledge of risk assessment and management procedures
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to build up a rapport with patients and the MDT
- Experience in providing counselling to clients/carers
- Ability to impart complex information to patients, relatives and carers, with different levels of understanding.
- Ability to undertake and promote evidence based practice.
- Ability to lead, co-ordinate and motivate.
- Ability to work autonomously or as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to chair and facilitate meetings.
- Computer literacy.
- Basic Counselling skills.
- Experience of delivering presentations
- Knowledge of Vulnerable Adults Procedures and Adults with Incapacity Act.
- To be flexible regarding early/ late appointment times as necessary.
- Ability to travel around Cumbria and distances out of Cumbrian area
Desirable criteria
- Expert clinical skills relevant to nursing care for adult patients with Epilepsy.
- Diploma in Adult Nursing
- Experience in Neurology/Epilepsy Setting.
- Neurology Training
- Nurse Prescribing Certificate.
- Relevant, demonstrable experience in specialty area
- Mentoring of junior members of staff and students.
- Advanced clinical assessment skills or willingness to develop these.
- To have proven experience of service development.
- Experience of running research and audit programmes.
- Project management skills.

Epilepsy is a serious neurological condition that can affect anyone, at any age and from any walk of life and affects around one in every 100 people in the UK. The consequences of an epilepsy diagnosis are severe and wide-reaching. Diagnosis can result in the loss of a driving licence and loss of employment. It can also affect someone's education and employment prospects, and lead to an increased degree of social isolation. The post of the Epilepsy Specialist Nurse would involve help to promote and lead good practice in the diagnosis, management and treatment of adults who live with epilepsy. This would also involve providing a seamless, high quality service in providing support, advice and education to, their families and carers.
