Role summary

The Assistant Practitioner will join the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy Team in Rotherham, supporting Physiotherapists in patient assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for a range of musculoskeletal conditions. Working under supervision, they will deliver delegated patient care, including exercise programmes and rehabilitation interventions. The role involves working with diverse patient presentations and requires the ability to recognise changes in a patient's condition and escalate concerns. The ideal candidate is highly motivated with an interest in strength and conditioning and gym-based rehabilitation.

Key responsibilities

  • Support Physiotherapists in the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred MSK rehabilitation.
  • Undertake delegated assessments and interventions appropriate to the individual's competence and scope of practice.
  • Deliver and progress therapeutic exercise programmes, both individually and within group settings where appropriate.
  • Provide patients with education and advice regarding exercise, activity, self-management and appropriate management of their condition.
  • Monitor patient progress and provide feedback to the supervising Physiotherapist.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and confidential clinical documentation in accordance with local policies and professional standards.

Essential criteria

  • Understanding of the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Understanding of the risk assessment process
  • Understanding of the role of Physiotherapy in the rehabilitation and management of musculoskeletal / orthopaedic conditions.
  • Knowledge and understanding in rehabilitation and exercise
  • Demonstrates knowledge of equipment available and able to assess and fit where applicable
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and implications for patient care
  • Experience of management of resources
  • Evidence of development and supervision of staff and students
  • Up to date documented evidence of CPD relevant to clinical area
  • Experience of working within a multi-professional team
  • Relevant foundation degree or NVQ level 3 in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Care or equivalent with additional relevant experience
  • Due to the nature of the role it is essential that applicants are able to travel independently across the county and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes. If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Equality Act 2010

Desirable criteria

  • Able to recognise when guidance and support is required
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in clinical audit and evidence gathering methods
  • Awareness and understanding of relevant health and Social Care legislation
  • Experience of working within a Physiotherapy setting
  • Experience of user/carer participation and engagement in review/development of services
  • Completed recognised IT course e.g. ECDL/Elite/MOST
  • Qualification related to sports and exercises

The Assistant Practitioner will work as an integral member of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy Team in Rotherham, supporting Physiotherapists in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients presenting with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.

Working under the direction of a qualified Physiotherapist, the post holder will deliver delegated aspects of patient care, including exercise programmes, rehabilitation interventions and advice to help patients manage their condition and improve their functional independence.

The role will involve working with patients across a broad range of presentations, including spinal, upper and lower limb conditions, and persistent musculoskeletal disorders.

The Assistant Practitioner will be expected to work within their agreed scope of practice, recognising changes in a patient's condition and escalating concerns appropriately to a registered Physiotherapist or other appropriate healthcare professional.

The successful Band 4 Assistant Practitioner candidate should be highly motivated, with a keen interest in strength and conditioning and a desirable background in gym-based rehabilitation, demonstrating enthusiasm for supporting patients to achieve their rehabilitation goal
