Role summary

The Gynaecology Unit Manager provides clinical and operational leadership for Gynaecology Outpatients, the Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU), and Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU). This role ensures high-quality, safe, and patient-centred care, maintaining clinical standards and service efficiency. The manager will lead and develop the nursing and support workforce, promoting professional excellence and continuous quality improvement. They act as a clinical expert, supporting staff development and evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes.

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered Adult Nurse
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Mentorship/teaching qualification
  • Evidence of further study within Gynaecology
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

  • CQI Practitioner
  • Master's Degree or working towards
  • Professional Nurse Advocate
  • Understanding of all national performance standards
  • Good verbal and written skills, with experience of presenting to teams
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage priorities
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • IT Literate
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Familiar with imaging PACS and CRIS computerised systems
  • Knowledge of Gynaecology, and procedures carried out in EPU/GAU and Gynaecology Outpatients
  • Knowledge of NHS operating framework
  • Knowledge of patient pathways and RTT
  • Experience of budget management
  • Previous experience at Band 6 within Gynaecology
  • Proven experience of managing a department/ward/unit
  • Clinical experience within an outpatient setting
  • Experience of teaching / assessing / supervising junior staff members in a clinical setting
  • PDN experience

The Gynaecology Unit Manager is responsible for providing visible clinical and operational leadership across Gynaecology Outpatients, the Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) and Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU). The post holder will ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, effective and patient-centred care whilst maintaining clinical standards, service efficiency and compliance with organisational objectives.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead and manage the nursing and support workforce, promote professional excellence through practice development, and drive continuous quality improvement through robust clinical governance processes.

They will act as a clinical expert and role model, supporting staff development, service innovation and evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes and experiences.

The post holder will be expected to work autonomously and exercise professional judgement whilst maintaining accountability for operation
