Role summary
This role involves working as a Highly Specialist Children's Speech and Language Therapist within the new Experts at Hand team. You will provide early Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support directly in mainstream schools and colleges. The focus is on early identification and school-based interventions for children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). Responsibilities include delivering SLT in line with Experts at Hand guidance and supporting mainstream education settings to provide effective universal and targeted interventions.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver care and support at a highly specialist level.
- Develop knowledge, skills, and clinical networks in your specialist area, engaging in audit, service improvement, and research.
- Analyse and interpret clinical and non-clinical information to profile strengths, difficulties, needs, diagnoses, and prognoses in complex conditions.
- Develop care plans collaboratively with children, young people, parents, and others.
- Undertake comprehensive autonomous speech, language, and communication assessments for children and young people, including those with complex presentations.
Essential criteria
- Holds recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent.
- Holds Health Professions Council licence to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist.
- Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
- Evidence of completion of relevant short course and continuing professional development
- Holds post-graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia or is able to participate and complete a post graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia.
- Extensive experience at post-graduate level with a range of speech, language communication difficulties in children.
- Significant experience of working with children and young people with a range of complex speech, language, and special educational needs including evidence of working with CYP who stammer
- Significant experience at post-graduate level of working in multidisciplinary teams to assess the needs of children and families.
- Experience at post-graduate level of using a range of assessments and assessment processes including experience of assessment for CYP for whom there are stammering concerns
- Experience of data gathering methodology and participation in clinical audit.
- National policies and procedures relevant to Children's Speech and Language Therapy and to Children and Young People's Education.
- Safeguarding procedures and their implementation in practice.
- Demonstrate an ongoing awareness of recent developments in practice and research including National guidance including for CYP who stammer
- Understanding of clinical governance and risk management and their implications for the service.
- Excellent analytical and reflective skills.
- Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of relevant speech, language, and communication assessments, interventions, and techniques how to evaluate their relevance and effectiveness.
- Must be able to meet the transport requirements of the post

The Experts at Hand initiative, from the Department for Education, brings speech and language therapists (SLTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) directly into mainstream schools and colleges to provide early Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support
We are inviting applicants who are interested in joining our team to work with children and young people within early years and mainstream schools with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) focusing on early identification and early years and school-based interventions to accelerate progress and enhance parent carer support.
As part of a team, you will be responsible for the delivery of SLT in line with the Experts at Hand guidance. As well as the responsibilities listed in the JD the roles will focus on supporting mainstream education settings to deliver effective universal, targeted and targeted + interventions for CYP with SLCN, for example through Whole-setting support, Consultative advice, Workforce development, Group interventions and Earlier intervention.
