Role summary

This role is for a passionate and experienced leader to join the Community Children's Nursing service as a Workforce and Service Development Lead. You will provide strategic and operational leadership to strengthen the capability, resilience, and sustainability of the CCN workforce. Key responsibilities include leading workforce development, education, audit, quality improvement, and practice learning. The aim is to ensure services are safe, evidence-based, and aligned with national guidance and Trust priorities. You will collaborate with leadership, L&D teams, and external partners to support staff development and service improvement.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to strengthen the quality, safety, capability, and sustainability of the Community Children's Nursing (CCN) workforce.
  • Lead workforce development, education, audit, quality improvement, and practice learning across the service.
  • Ensure care is safe, evidence-based, and aligned with national guidance, regulatory requirements, and Trust priorities.
  • Support staff development, student education, and workforce planning.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement.
  • Work collaboratively across CCN leadership, Learning & Development teams, and external education partners.

Essential criteria

  • Registered Children's Nurse (RN Child) with current NMC registration
  • Educated to degree level (BSc or equivalent)
  • Relevant postgraduate study or clear commitment to Masterslevel development
  • Practice Educator / Practice Assessor qualification or equivalent experience with willingness to obtain
  • Experience working in a senior children's nursing role within community or equivalent setting
  • Experience of safeguarding children and managing child protection processes
  • Experience of supervising staff and supporting appraisal and personal development
  • Experience of supporting clinical education of learners within a skill mixed workforce
  • Experience of partnership working across health, education, social care and/or voluntary sectors
  • Involvement in clinical governance activity, including audit, quality improvement or service evaluation
  • Experience contributing to policy, protocol or practice development
  • Experience supporting or leading service or workforce change
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate highly complex, sensitive or contentious information
  • Ability to lead, motivate and develop others, fostering a positive learning culture
  • Ability to assess competence, provide constructive feedback and support professional development
  • Strong organisational skills with ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work autonomously within scope of professional accountability
  • Ability to analyse information, identify risk and make sound judgements
  • Effective problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to facilitate learning and supervision within practice based environments
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships across professional boundaries
  • Up to date knowledge of national guidance, policy and best practice relevant to children's community nursing
  • Sound knowledge of safeguarding legislation, mental capacity and information governance
  • Understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement and risk management
  • Knowledge of learning, teaching, assessment and supervision principles in practice
  • Understanding of multi agency working and models of children's community nursing
  • Knowledge of NHS structures, priorities and current healthcare context
  • Demonstrates awareness of effective use of resources to support quality and safety
  • Confident in the use of IT systems for data collection, reporting, analysis and communication
  • Demonstrates commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in practice and leadership
  • Acts with professionalism, integrity and accountability
  • Emotionally intelligent, reflective and self aware

Desirable criteria

  • Postgraduate qualification in education, leadership, workforce development or related field
  • SPQ/SCPHN Qualification
  • Experience in workforce development, education leadership or practice learning coordination
  • Experience of managing training programmes, CPD funding or placement capacity
  • Coaching or mentoring skills
  • Experience influencing practice change across a service
  • Knowledge of workforce planning, education commissioning or practice education governance
  • Experience of managing or contributing to CPD, education or training budgets
