Role summary

This role is for an enthusiastic and motivated Staff Nurse to join the Day Surgery Services team at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, based at Poole Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for admitting, preparing, caring for, and discharging patients undergoing day surgery. They will contribute to the development and expansion of the service, which operates Monday to Friday with plans for expansion to six days and extended hours. A background in general surgical/orthopaedic nursing and excellent communication skills are essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Admit and prepare patients for theatre, ensuring adherence to local policy.
  • Care for patients post-operatively.
  • Discharge patients under nurse-led discharge criteria.
  • Be a key stakeholder in the development and expansion of the Day Surgery Service.
  • Maintain and develop high standards of care.

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. Adult
  • Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience
  • Experience of caring for patients with acute and long term conditions
  • Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
  • IT skills and knowledge of clinical systems
  • Demonstrable ability with vital signs monitoring equipment and ability to recognise the deteriorating patient
  • Sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology and surgical procedures
  • NMC standards and limitations of professional practice
  • Adaptable to unpredictable workloads
  • Good organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Team player

Desirable criteria

  • Advanced Diploma/Degree in Adult Health Nursing Studies
  • Experience of recovery and pre assessment
  • Experience of Supervising staff
  • Experience of delegating workload, motivating a team and monitoring patient progress
  • Demonstrable evidence of working in Day Surgery/Surgery/Orthopaedics
  • Venepuncture & cannulation
  • ECG's
  • Catheterisation
  • Appraisal champion
  • Medications management competency: IV and IV medication administration including administration of blood products
  • Knowledge of specialist fields of nursing e.g. trauma, orthopaedics, medicine, frailty, surgery etc
  • Ability to work under pressure and with frequent interruptions
  • Confident in liaising with all members of the MDT

Job summary

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic Staff Nurse to join the progressive and dedicated Day Surgery Services team at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, based on Day of Surgery at the Poole site for 34.5 hours per week.

Day of Surgery incorporates an Admission and Day Surgery services.

The service is currently open Mon to Fri 07:00-20:00 with plans to make this a six day service and extend opening times 22:00.The successful candidate will be responsible for admitting and preparing patients for theatre ensuring that local policy is adhered to, caring for patients post-operatively and discharging patients under the nurse led discharge criteria. Once in post, they will be a key stakeholder in the development and expansion of the Day Surgery Service with the ultimate aim of enhancing the patient's experience.

The successful candidate will require significant experience within general surgical/orthopaedic nursing; have excellent communication skills and a commitment to maintaining and developing high standards.
