Role summary
The Clinical Practice Educator (Maternity) will lead education, training, and workforce development across maternity services. This role ensures staff are equipped to deliver safe, high-quality, evidence-based care. The postholder will combine educational leadership with a significant clinical presence, supporting staff development, service improvement, and patient safety through teaching and hands-on clinical practice. Essential criteria
- Registered midwife
- Educated to degree level or equivalent with evidence of further professional development.
- Practice Assessor, Mentor or equivalent qualification
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Simulation training (e.g. PROMPT, NLS, ALSO, MOET)
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (or working towards)
- Master's degree (or working towards)
- Experience working as a Band 6 Midwife across maternity settings within a multidisciplinary team
- Experience supporting the learning and development of staff and/or students
- Experience delivering education or training programmes
- Participation in audit, governance or quality improvement activities
- Experience leading or contributing to service improvement projects
- Experience supporting preceptorship programmes
- Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of national maternity education, safety and workforce development frameworks, including NMC Education Standards, CNST Maternity Incentive Scheme, Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle, Ockenden Recommendations and NHS England maternity priorities.
- Knowledge of current maternity practice and clinical standards
- Ability to analyse information and use data to inform improvement
- Ability to influence and engage staff at all levels
- Knowledge of education theory and adult learning principles
- Experience delivering simulation-based training
- Education and qualification

Main duties of the job
Lead the development, delivery and evaluation of education and training programmes for maternity staff.Support the professional development, competency achievement and career progression of midwives, student midwives and maternity support workers.Maintain a visible clinical presence, providing real-time support, coaching and leadership within maternity services.Facilitate simulation training, skills development, preceptorship and practice supervision activities.Promote evidence-based practice, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.Monitor training compliance and support organisational requirements relating to CNST, CQC, NMC and Trust standards.
