Role summary
This role involves providing high-quality diabetic eye screening and grading services across Gloucestershire, ensuring early detection of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy. The post holder will work autonomously in General Practice surgeries, performing digital retinal photography, grading images, and educating patients. It requires managing clinical and operational priorities while adhering to national quality standards.
Essential criteria
- Degree in relevant subject, Registered Nursing Qualification or equivalent experience in diabetic eye screening.
- Completed the Level 3 Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Diploma including grading modules.
- Relevant OCT in Digital Surveillance qualification.
- Have a valid full UK driving licence.
- Significant previous experience as a Retinal Screener or Screener/Grader, including OCT Capture.
- Driving 3,500 kg mobile screening vehicle.
- Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge and experience using Optomize Software.
- Undertaken training and experience in driving 3,500 kg mobile screening vehicle.
- Proven knowledge and skills in technical requirements of the role, including resolving technical issues.
- Ability to exercise professional judgement and make autonomous decisions within agreed protocols and own level of competence.
- Personal Attributes
- Demonstrable ability to work autonomously and manage competing clinical and operational priorities.
- Communicate effectively with other health care professionals and patients.
- Organise own workload and have good time management skills.
- Have access to a car/vehicle for screening clinics.

Job summary
We are looking for an diabetic Retinal Screener and Grader to join our team in providing diabetic eye screening services.
Main duties of the job
To provide a high quality systematic screening and grading service as part of the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme for the whole of Gloucestershire against National Service Framework and National Quality Assurance Standards, to ensure the early detection of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy and the reduction of blindness. To support the activities of the department to ensure that National Quality Standards and the Priorities and Planning Framework and other targets are met. To maintain the reputation of the department as an award winning enterprise, which is high-profile being under the overall direction of the National Coordinator for the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programmes in England.
