Role summary

The University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is seeking a knowledgeable, innovative, and enthusiastic Clinical Perfusionist to join its team. This role involves delivering a comprehensive and autonomous clinical perfusion service for an expanding cardiac surgical programme, including participation in a 24-hour on-call commitment. The successful applicant will contribute to department protocols and research, supporting consultant colleagues in advanced cardiac procedures.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive, specialist and autonomous Clinical Perfusion service to patients and the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Contribute to and participate in the development of department protocols and research.
  • Support consultant colleagues in the application and choice of cardiopulmonary bypass and mechanical circulatory support in routine and emergency procedures.
  • Take delegated responsibility for the delivery of a highly specialist perfusion service, ensuring effectiveness and coordination.
  • Offer and undertake a range of highly specialised perfusion techniques during routine and emergency cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Assess patient medical history, pathology, and diagnosis to make appropriate decisions concerning procedure conduct.

Essential criteria

  • Accreditation by Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland or close to.
  • MSc
  • Eligible for Licentiate registration with College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • 1st on-call demonstrable experience.
  • Familiarity with the application of cardiopulmonary bypass in critical/emergency situations and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Conversant with, and the limitations of, equipment and devices used for the direct delivery of routine and specialist clinical perfusion techniques to patients.
  • Demonstrate competence in employing monitoring and test results to make sound clinical decisions when choosing medication*

Desirable criteria

  • Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland Advanced Certificate.
  • Evidence of Policy and/or Protocol development and/or contribution.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust seeks applications from knowledgeable, innovative, enthusiastic applicants to join a team of eight clinical perfusionists in delivering a comprehensive perfusion resource to an expanding cardiac surgical programme.

There are 1000+ adult cardiac surgical procedures per year currently being undertaken in three cardiac theatres at the SouthWest Cardiothoracic Centre with an increasing commitment to minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

The successful applicant must be Registered with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain & Ireland and newly or soon to be qualified individuals are most welcome.

All training required will be given and you will be expected to participate fully in Clinical Perfusion's 24hr on-call commitment.
