Role summary
This role is for an experienced High Dependency/Critical Care Nurse to join the Adult Critical Care Unit (HDU) at St Bartholomew's Hospital as a Band 7 Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse. The unit cares for complex cardiothoracic, aortovascular, thoracic surgery, cardiology, endocrine, and breast level 2 patients. The successful candidate will provide professional nursing leadership, clinical oversight, and ensure high standards of care within the HDU. They will also coordinate patient pathways, offer guidance to patients and families, and act as a role model and clinical teacher.
Essential criteria
- oRegistrant with NMC BSc/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification / training and experience Adult Critical Care Course or Equivalent Mentorship course
- oILS / ALS provider Leadership programme or equivalent
- oManagement qualification or equivalent experience
- oSpecialist relevant clinical course
- oEvidence of continuing professional development Up to date knowledge of clinical speciality and evidence based practice
- oKnowledge of current NHS, professional and educational issues
- oRelevant critical care OR High Dependency experience 2 years Band 6 in critical care setting critical 5 years clinical experience post registrarion
- oEvidence of positive contribution to critical care
- oExperienced in advanced support of critical care patient at band 6 and above
- oInvolvement in provision of adult critical care course
- oEvidence of proficient clinical skills in critical care Proficient in communication
- oUnderstanding of reflective practice and how it can be used
- oEvidence of critical thinking and initiative to solve problems and manage workload
- oAble to work in a changing environment and to actively support / promote planned change
- oDemonstrates effective team work skills
- oBasic computer skills
- oFlexibility Ability to respond to changes in a proactive way

Job summary
We are excited to announce a new opportunity for an experienced High Dependency/Critical Care Nurse to join our dedicated team as a band 7 Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse in our world class Adult Critical Care Unit at St Bartholomew's Hospital.
HDU is a 12 bedded unit caring for complex cardiothoracic surgical, aortovascular, thoracic surgery, complex cardiology, endocrine and breast level 2 patients. We have one of the busiest Heart Attack Centres in Europe, ECMO and Oncology patients within our specialist centre. We have 50 critical care beds across 4 areas. The High Dependency Unit (HDU) is a fast-paced and an integral part of the critical care service.
Must be able to work a mixture of long days, bank holidays and nights to meet service requirements.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking an individual with a strong clinical background and well-developed leadership skills. The successful candidate will provide professional nursing leadership and clinical oversight across a range of services within HDU and ensuring high standards of care. The role involves coordinating and supporting patient pathways, while offering guidance and support to patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
