Role summary
This role is for a Specialist or Highly Specialist Applied Psychologist within the 'Together, WE Can' service, supporting young people in residential care or on the edge of care. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team, providing psychological assessments and therapies to young people with complex conditions. The role involves integrating into the support team, sharing daily routines, and helping the wider staff develop a trauma-informed approach. While advertised as an 8a, applications from Band 7 Psychologists are welcome with a development plan.
Key responsibilities
- Provide highly specialist psychological assessment of young people with highly complex conditions.
- Recognise and report potential for or signs of harm, abuse, or neglect, including poor clinical practice.
- Undertake risk assessment and risk management for young people and provide specialist advice to other professionals.
- Formulate plans for highly specialist psychological therapy and/or management of clients' mental health conditions.
- Implement a range of highly specialist psychological therapies for individuals, carers, families, and groups.
Essential criteria
- HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist
- Post-graduate training (doctoral level equivalent) in clinical / counselling / forensic psychology (or its equivalent prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Trained in clinical supervision (within agreed timescale)
- Trained in care co-ordination (within agreed timescale)
- Working with mental health/learning disability clients (depending on designated service area)
- Multi-disciplinary team working
- Doctoral level knowledge of evidence- based practice relevant to the role
- Doctoral level knowledge of risk assessment and risk management
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and undertake care co-ordination/lead practitioner responsibilities
- Undertake complex multiagency working and liaise with multiple systems
- Utilise psychometric tests competently
- Respects and has awareness of the advantages of joint working with other experienced professionals in a multidisciplinary setting
- Able to work flexibly and co-operatively as part of a team
- Able to use own initiative and make decisions independently
- Self aware and committed to professional and personal development. Able to accept and respond positively to feedback from supervision
Desirable criteria
- Registration with BPS
- Post-graduate qualification showing evidence of supervised practice in an evidence-based psychological therapeutic model
- Experience of joint working with statutory, voluntary and private sector agencies
- Experience of CBT, DBT, Psychodynamics, systematic therapy
- Experience of research and audit

Job summary
'Together, WE Can' is an innovative, integrated service model supporting young people who are in residential care or on the edge of care. Our aim is to support young people to live within their own family networks wherever possible, by providing a multi-agency approach and focusing on prevention, reunification and supporting young people, in a planned way to move on into independence.
Based within the residential children's home, you will work within a multi-disciplinary team and invest and promote a relational approach to supporting young people. You will work on an individual basis with young people as well as in groups in delivering a psychosocial model of support.
You will integrate yourself within the support team, sharing the living space and daily routines of young people, providing a natural, relational approach in the delivery of your interventions. You will have a key role in supporting the wider staff team in developing their own resilience and a trauma informed approach using a variety of tools including formulation.
