Role summary
This role is for a Senior Research Nurse/Clinical Trial Practitioner to lead the Myeloma/Real World Evidence Trials Team within the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit at UCH. The post holder will autonomously coordinate, manage, and provide regulatory oversight for a portfolio of haematology clinical trials. Responsibilities include line managing staff, educating patients and colleagues, coordinating patient care, collecting biological samples and trial data, and monitoring drug side effects. The ideal candidate will have significant clinical research experience and leadership skills.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate, manage, and provide regulatory oversight for a portfolio of phase II and III clinical trials in haematology.
- Line manage staff and provide leadership and support to the Myeloma/Real World Evidence Trials Team.
- Educate patients and colleagues on clinical trials and related care.
- Coordinate care for patients participating in clinical trials.
- Collect and prepare biological samples, and collect trial data.
- Monitor expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.
Essential criteria
- For Senior Research Nurse candidates: Registered Nurse Part 1, 2, 12
- For Senior Clinical Trial Practitioner candidates: Registration on the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) Clinical Research Practitioner Accredited Register, or working towards.
- Completed post graduate diploma in speciality or related field
- Professionally recognised teaching course
- Completed degree in the speciality or related field
- Demonstrates a high level of knowledge from post registration nursing experience
- Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in caring for oncology/haematology patients through experience
- Can demonstrate knowledge of clinical research through experience working with patients on clinical trials
- Experience of formal/informal teaching of patients and staff
- Experience of being a mentor for junior nurses
- Experience working as a preceptor/facilitator
- Demonstrates ability to take charge and delegate duties
- Demonstrates evidence of professional development
- Proven knowledge of ICH GCP guidelines
- Proven ability to communicate effectively in writing
- Proven ability to work effectively under pressure
- Computer literacy
Desirable criteria
- Experience of phlebotomy, cannulation and management of central lines
- Experience of radiation protection procedures
- Experience of administration of chemotherapeutic agents

The Research Nurse/Clinical Trial Practitioner is an autonomous specialist working within the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will take responsibility for the co-ordination, regulatory oversight and management of a clinical research portfolio comprising in-house, national and international phase II and III clinical trials in haematology. They will also line manage a number of staff and provide leadership and support to the team as a whole.
Main duties of the job
You will be part of an expanding and dynamic clinical team helping research staff to deliver excellent care to adults with cancer. The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination and management of clinical trials as well as education of patients and colleagues, coordination of care of patients on trials, collection and preparation of biological samples, collection of trial data, the monitoring of the expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.
