Role summary
Join the expanding Virtual Ward team as a Registered Nurse, providing hospital-level care to patients in their homes. You will administer IV antibiotics, assess clinical conditions, and monitor treatment, working autonomously within a multidisciplinary team. This role requires an innovative nurse committed to patient-centred care and managing their own caseload. A valid UK driving license is essential for visiting patients.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver safe and effective intravenous antibiotic therapy to patients within their own homes.
- Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments during each patient visit.
- Competently manage and dress vascular access devices, including PICC lines, midlines and other central venous access devices.
- Obtain blood samples via vascular access devices and through peripheral venepuncture as clinically indicated.
- Monitor patients' response to treatment, recognising any signs of deterioration or complications.
- Escalate clinical concerns promptly and appropriately in line with local policies and clinical pathways.
Essential criteria
- Current registration with NMC on part one or two of the Register
- Current UK driving licence held for a minimum of 12 months
- IV drug administration competence
- Proven clinical practice in an acute hospital or relevant home IV service
- Experience of utilising reflective practice
- Experience using IV access devices such as PICC lines
- Understanding of NMC Code of Conduct and guidelines of professional practice
- Good theoretical and practical knowledge of nursing within the clinical area
- Health and Safety awareness
- Understanding and knowledge of Quality issues and Clinical Governance
- Awareness of Trust and Ward/Department polices
- Professional awareness reflected in attitude and appearance
- Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with all members of the healthcare team, colleagues, patients and relatives
- Ability to achieve competency in Trust computer systems
- Practical application of Trust documentation standards
- Ability to take initiative when required and liaise with the appropriate manager/bleep holder

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Registered Nurse to join our expanding Virtual Ward team.
The Virtual Ward provides hospital-level care to patients in the comfort of their own homes, enabling individuals who would otherwise require an inpatient hospital stay to receive safe, effective treatment whilst maintaining their independence. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality care to patients receiving intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy at home.
This is an exciting time to join the service as it continues to grow and develop. We are looking for an innovative nurse who enjoys working autonomously, embraces new ways of working, and is committed to delivering excellent patient-centred care within the community.
The successful applicant will be responsible for visiting patients in their own homes to administer IV antibiotics, assess their clinical condition, undertake blood sampling (both peripherally and via vascular access devices), and provide ongoing monitoring throughout their treatment. You will be supported by the wider Virtual Ward multidisciplinary team while enjoying the autonomy of managing your own caseload.
