Role summary
This is a joint appointment between the NHS Department of Clinical Biochemistry and the University Department, the Wolfson Centre for Prevention of Stroke and Dementia. The role involves developing and implementing specialist testing (mainly mass spectrometry) for service and research, participating in the duty biochemist rota, and developing and analysing research assays. Opportunities for further study and qualifications are available. The post holder will spend 2.5 days per week in each department.
Key responsibilities
- Help provide a comprehensive scientific and clinical service in Clinical Biochemistry to the Trust, ICB and other service users.
- Undertake research and development activities in line with the needs of both the NHS Clinical Biochemistry department and the Wolfson CPSD unit.
- Participate in the Duty Biochemist rota, providing clinical review of reports and advice to clinicians.
- Coordinate and implement research and development projects, and assist in clinical audit projects.
- Provide highly skilled technical services across all analytical sections of the department, including analysis of routine blood, urine and other fluid samples.
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration and appropriate masters level qualification or equivalent
- Completion of STP or equivalent in Clinical Biochemistry
Desirable criteria
- PhD in appropriate scientific field
- Laboratory Skills and Knowledge
- A good knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry and specialist knowledge of advanced analytical techniques
- Experience of Mass Spec method development
- Experience of neurological marker analysis
- Experience of DNA extraction techniques
- Experience of publishing research papers in Clinical Biochemistry
