Role summary
This role involves providing mobile wheelchair repair and maintenance services for powered and manual wheelchairs, as well as specialised posture management equipment. The technician will work at the wheelchair maintenance facility and in the community, including patient homes and hospitals. Duties include decontamination, refurbishment, assembly, delivery, and collection of equipment. The post also requires participation in an on-call out-of-hours emergency repair service.
Key responsibilities
- Complete decontamination and specialist refurbishment of wheelchairs and accessories according to manufacturer instructions.
- Accurately record processes and equipment used in servicing medical devices within the quality management system.
- Assemble configured equipment, ensuring documentation, testing, and safety checks are carried out.
- Deliver and collect equipment to/from client addresses, including homes, schools, and day centres.
- Provide an on-call out-of-hours emergency repair service on a rotational basis, visiting users at home if necessary.
- Maintain supplied vehicles in a clean, tidy, and roadworthy condition, ensuring spare parts meet daily needs.
Essential criteria
- City & Guilds/NVQ or equivalent in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g. mechanical or electronic engineering, applied science) or equivalent work based experience.
- Capable of using a wide range of hand and powered tools to facilitate repair and maintenance of equipment.
- A current valid manual driving licence.
Desirable criteria
- Capable of prioritising own work.
- Understanding of control and switch systems. This includes the ability to reprogram devices to better suit the system.

Job summary
The job is based at the wheelchair maintenance facility, near to the wheelchair service and the essential function is to provide a dedicated, efficient, mobile, wheelchair repair and maintenance service to the users of powered and manual wheelchairs as well as specialised posture management equipment prescribed through the contracting services.
This post will undertake repairs and maintenance of powered and manual wheelchairs predominantly at the wheelchair maintenance facility as part of a servicing for reissue programme, but also for patients in the community or in hospital on occasion. The post also provides the delivery and collection of powered and manual wheelchairs for patients in the community.
This job requires that the post holder use vehicles provided and fuelled by the Rehabilitation Engineering Division, to visit; hospitals, special schools, private houses and other establishments as required. Therefore the post-holder will need an appropriate driving licence, be able to provide a high level of service to service users in a variety of locations, be flexible, adaptable and supportive in their approach to completing the work required.
