Role summary
This is a three-year apprenticeship programme combining work-based and academic learning to become a Registered Operating Department Practitioner, gaining a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice. The role involves working collaboratively to maintain patient safety and provide high standards of skilled care and support during all phases of perioperative care (anaesthesia, surgery, and post-anaesthetic care). You will work as part of a designated operating department team, delivering patient-focused care under supervision, developing your competence, and completing an apprentice portfolio.
Key responsibilities
- Successfully complete all educational elements of the programme as specified by RJAH, Staffordshire University, and Institute of Apprenticeship standards.
- Complete an apprentice portfolio demonstrating Knowledge, Skills, and Behavioural leading towards final End Point Assessment.
- Work as part of a designated operating department team, delivering care focused on direct patient needs.
- Practice (under supervision) assessing patients in theatres, exercising professional judgement to establish patient-centred goals.
- Undertake anaesthetic, surgical & post-anaesthesia care interventions including managing airways, cannulation, catheterisation & manual handling/positioning of patients.
- Maintain a sterile working area, perform aseptic technique, and prepare/provide correct sterile surgical equipment.
Essential criteria
- 5 GCSEs grades A-C/ 9-4 - must include Maths, English and a Physical Science (or a demonstrable equivalent general education attainment)
- 112 UCAS points, to include one Physical Science Subject
- Health and Social Care Experience
- Previous health and care experience within the peri-operative setting
- Basic IT skills
- Excellent communisation skills - verbal and written
- Good organisational and time-management skills
- Team working skills
