Role summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated Senior Biomedical Scientist to join the Cellular Pathology Immunocytochemistry (ICC) and Molecular Pathology service at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories. The role involves leading within the main laboratory, acting as a training officer, and contributing to staff management and procurement. The successful candidate will deliver a timely, high-quality diagnostic service in a fast-paced environment, supporting routine and companion diagnostic testing.

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate the provision of clinical technical services by supervising staff and maintaining resources.
  • Communicate essential information to the Laboratory Manager and assist with personnel issues.
  • Deputise for the Laboratory Manager in their absence.
  • Undertake training of scientific and support staff and act as a training officer.
  • Maintain adequate consumable and reagent stock levels.
  • Supervise staff, organise and prioritise workload to meet demanding deadlines.

Essential criteria

  • Approve degree
  • HPC registration
  • MSc or relevant experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Relevant post registration experience in a histopathology laboratory
  • In depth specialist knowledge of histology
  • Demonstrate knowledge of patient confidentiality
  • Working knowledge of computers
  • Understand and implements quality assurance
  • Understanding of the need for health and safety in relation to themselves and others
  • Evidence of ability to interact with other groups of staff
  • Evidence of good verbal skills

Desirable criteria

  • IBMS Specialist diploma in histopathology
  • Evidence of practical experience in: non-gynae cytology, immunocytochemistry, renal and muscle biopsies.

  • Experience of in-house training of staff
  • Experience in managing health and safety
  • Motivational skills
  • Evidence of ability to write in-house documents
  • Undertake Risk Assessments
