Role summary
This role is for a Life Skills Recovery Worker within the Coborn Centre Mental Health, specifically on Pluto Ward, a 4-bedded PICU inpatient ward for young people experiencing acute mental health difficulties. The successful candidate will assist the nursing and multidisciplinary team in providing recovery-focused care, helping young people understand their crisis, learn coping skills, and prepare for discharge. The position involves working a mixture of long days, night shifts, and 9-5 shifts.
Key responsibilities
- To work alongside qualified nursing and occupational therapy staff to jointly co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the service and support the teams to deliver a robust, high quality clinical service.
- To develop and maintain strong links with community resources, including within the trust, local authority and third sector organisations in order to refer patients and support their engagement in preparation for discharge.
- To assist with visits and events in the community when appropriate.
- To develop specialist knowledge and skills in child and adolescent mental health, and to train and educate others in their practice.To support with discharge planning.
- To work alongside and feedback to a well-established MDT and ensure effective communication with all relevant personnel both internal and external to the Trust.
- To practice within professional guidelines and promote professional practice in clinical area.To ensure continuous personal development through the utilisation of regular supervision, annual appraisal and training where appropriate.
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent mental health experience
- Working with young people/ adolescents in a therapeutic environment.
- Managing challenging and aggressive behaviour.
- Working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment and knowledge of methods to develop culturally sensitive practice.
- Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate.
- Experience of providing and receiving complex, sensitive information.
- oAbility to work with patients on an individual or group basis, focusing on their recovery pathway.
- oAbility to enable and empower patients in a way that increases their self esteem, raises their confidence and help them to identify positive qualities in self.
- oExcellent verbal and written communication skills relevant to the legal requirements of client care and related issues and the documentation of that care.
- oAbility to support the multidisciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of mental and physical care appropriate to the needs of the client group and clinical speciality and the ability to use evidence based approaches in the delivery of care.
- oExperience of devising groups and activities.
- oAbility to recognise stress in oneself and others and manage appropriately accessing additional support where necessary.

Desirable criteria
- Foundation degree in mental health studies

- Working with young people or adults who have experienced mental health difficulties.
- Experience of note keeping, making entries for therapeutic interventions.
- Facilitating therapeutic groups and individual interventions.

Pluto Ward's aim is to deliver a patient focused care that provides young people with an opportunity to better understand the crisis or behaviour that resulted in their admission and to learn coping skills to reduce the risk of relapse.
As a life skills recover worker, you will assist in the provision of outstanding recovery focused care as part of the nursing team and wider multi-disciplinary team.
