Role summary

Key responsibilities

  • Manage a clinical caseload providing a comprehensive, effective, and safe dietetic service.
  • Be responsible for the planning, development and direct delivery of dietetic care offered to people admitted to Parkview Clinic.
  • Assess patient nutritional risk and interpret relevant blood results, where appropriate.
  • Undertake development of nutritional resources to educate and treat people referred to the service.
  • Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including caseload management and direct clinical care.
  • Work with the facilities department to ensure adequate access to nutritionally appropriate diets in line with patient clinical need.

Essential criteria

  • BSc in Dietetics or equivalent
  • Registered with Health and Care Professions Council
  • Active continuing involvement in appropriate CPD
  • Articulate with good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients in one to one or group settings.
  • Able to convey highly complex, sensitive or contentious information (eg. challenge weight manipulation, communicate need for inpatient treatment) to patients, carers/families and a wide array of other professionals within and outside of the NHS, where there may be complex family and organisational systems.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of evidence-based treatment
  • Good interpersonal, dietary counselling and motivational skills.
  • Team building skills
  • Knowledge and skills in multidisciplinary team working with complex clients
  • Awareness and understanding of ethical issues that arise in this area of work.
  • Ability to manage and have good insight into the personal emotional impact of working with unpredictable levels of high emotional distress and psychological trauma amongst the client group being served.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional stance in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and potential threat of physical violence.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Ability to manage time effectively, managing a caseload and prioritising on a basis of need.
  • IT skills, for recording work activity, for searching databases and the internet, for word processing and preparing presentations and for using email and intranet systems.
  • Significant recent clinical dietetic experience including relevant training and experience within eating disorders and CAMHS and able to manage a caseload of patients with complex needs.
  • Evidence of CPD in a range of clinical settings relevant to this post.
  • Experience of working as an integral member of the MDT
  • Able to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the service.
  • Able to demonstrate leadership in dietetics for specialist area.
  • Able to deal with distressed patients, carers/families.
  • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance.
  • Committed to client centred, non-discriminatory practice

  • Relevant postgraduate continued professional development and significant evidence of clinical dietetic experience.

Job summary

The Clinical Specialist Dietitian will be part of a specialist multidisciplinary team and work as an autonomous, independent clinician; responsible for delivering safe, high-quality evidence-based dietetic assessment and treatment to inpatients across the Parkview Clinic site. The post holder will work with the MDT and the facilities team to ensure the site provides nutritionally appropriate care and treatment. The post holder will provide strategic input in matters relating to nutrition.

The post holder must be willing to travel across Coventry and Warwickshire for meetings, supervision and CPD opportunities.

Main duties of the job

In particular, the post holder will be required to:

Manage a clinical caseload providing a comprehensive, effective, and safe dietetic service, using highly specialist knowledge and skills.

Be responsible for the planning, development and direct delivery of dietetic care offered to people admitted to Parkview Clinic.

Receive and promptly respond to referrals.

Assess patient nutritional risk and interpret relevant blood results, where appropriate.

Undertake development of nutritional resources to educate and treat people referred to the service.
