Role summary
This role is for an experienced Band 6 Paediatric Nurse to join the Neptune Paediatric Unit, a 16-bed unit for children aged 0-16. The unit includes a designated Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) and is supported by a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will lead and coordinate a nursing team, ensuring high standards of care and contributing to clinical governance. This position offers a supportive and friendly work environment.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate a dedicated team of nursing and support staff in the delivery of a high standard of nursing care.
- In the absence of the Unit Manager, be responsible for the effective deployment of ward/department resources and follow escalation policies.
- Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of Governance systems relating to Risk Management, Health and Safety and Controls Assurance.
- Be responsible and accountable for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.
- Lead and monitor the practice and effectiveness of nursing actions, ensuring these are carried out with full regard for the safety of the patient and staff involved.
- Participate in all relevant aspects of the Governance process, taking the lead in the absence of the Unit manager.
Essential criteria
- Current NMC registration - RSCN
- Evidence of recent Continuous Professional Development
- Post basic certificate in relevant subject
- Experience of a senior nurse and appropriate advanced nursing skills
- Demonstrates understanding of principles of Clinical Governance (Risk Management & audit)
- Experience of working in a Paediatric unit

- EPALS/PILS
- Experience as Acting Band 6/Nurse in Charge

Our Neptune Paediatric Unit has 16 beds catering for children aged 0-16 requiring medical, surgical and day-stay admission.
We have a designated PAU consisting of 6 beds, isolation cubicle and treatment room. Neptune Paediatric Unit is fully supported by a large team of multi-disciplinary professionals including Doctors, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, qualified play staff/specialists, Paediatric Educators and Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialists.
