Role summary
This role involves working as a Lung Cancer Screening Specialist Nurse to facilitate early detection of lung cancer. The post holder will assess patient eligibility for screening, consent them for CT scans, review results, and manage incidental findings according to protocol. It requires providing specialist nursing advice, conducting lung health checks, and making informed decisions within professional practice. The role supports community and secondary care colleagues in patient management.
Key responsibilities
- Review and analyse scan results, participating in weekly Screening Review Meetings.
- Provide specialist lung cancer screening nursing advice to patients, carers, and stakeholders.
- Undertake or review comprehensive lung health checks risk assessments.
- Assess patients' eligibility and suitability for diagnostic tests, ensuring informed consent.
- Participate in writing protocols, guidelines, and patient information for service development.
- Support the clinical nurse manager in identifying complex clinical and non-clinical issues.
Essential criteria
- oCurrent Professional NMC Registration
- oEvidence of relevant CPD
- oEvidence of relevant post qualification study at postgraduate level or equivalent knowledge
- oStudy at level 6 (Degree/Diploma)
- oProfessional clinical experience in working in acute or community settings across Coventry and Warwickshire.
- oExcellent communication skills
- oAbility to successfully manage people and change
- oExperience of conflict management
- oParticipation in audits
- oAbility to work as part of a multi-disciplinary/interdisciplinary team and follow up actions from screening review meeting.
- oRegistered Nurse with significant band 5 experience
- oA knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence-based practice
- oAn understanding of current issues relating to the NHS and cancer care
- oA knowledge of professional policies and procedures
- oAwareness of relevant national and local targets
- oDetailed knowledge of the LCS protocol, quality standards and incidental finding guidance.
- oGood understanding of IT and technology
- oAble to prioritise and meet deadlines effectively
- oGood management of own and others time
- oAble to use initiative and make decisions
- oAbility to deal with difficult/sensitive situations
- oAbility to pay attention to detail to ensure accurate information is recorded and patients follow the correct pathway and incidental referral pathways.

Job summary
The overall purpose of the Lung Cancer Screening is to enable the early detection of lung cancer in order to save lives. Coventry & Warwickshire Health & Care Partnership and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance has identified high disease and smoking prevalence areas within Coventry where a significant impact can be made from detecting early-stage lung cancer.
The post holder will be expected to be flexible, responsive, and provide specialist knowledge to the patient (and their carers where applicable) assessing eligibility for lung cancer screening, assessing symptomatic patients and escalating as appropriate, consenting eligible patients to low dose CT scan, reviewing and sending LDCT scan results, as well as suspected lung cancer referrals and managing incidental findings as per protocol (i.e. SRM, GP, etc). Attention to detail and excellent organisation skills are of paramount importance. This post requires someone confident with spending a large amount of time on the phone to patients.
They will support community and secondary care colleagues in the effective management of patients with clinical responsibility for a defined patient group. The post holder will be able to make informed decisions within their own area and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards, objectives and targets are met.
