Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist to join King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves providing high-quality specialist nursing care, expert clinical assessment, and advice for patients with cancer-related complications. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely specialist oncology assessment and management, aiming to prevent avoidable hospital admissions and support patients through their acute phase of care. The post holder will also contribute to the continued development of the dynamic Acute Oncology Service.
Key responsibilities
- Ensure patients access high-quality Acute Oncology specialist nursing care and expert clinical assessment.
- Provide expert guidance on the assessment, investigation, and management of patients with newly diagnosed or suspected malignancy.
- Act as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, supporting patients with malignancy of unknown origin.
- Ensure patients and their families are fully informed and supported through comprehensive clinical, emotional, psychological, and social assessment.
- Participate in daily acute oncology ward rounds, facilitating investigations and expediting clinical decision-making.
- Deliver ongoing Acute Oncology teaching to medical and nursing staff across various units.
Essential criteria
- Educated to Degree level
- Systemic Anticancer Training
- Evidence of professional development at Level 6 or above
- NMC Level 1 Registered Nurse
- Extensive clinical experience pertinent to cancer care, oncology and/or acute medicine
Desirable criteria
- Relevant post -registration qualification in Cancer Care
- Demonstratable clinical knowledge and experience in SACT administration
- Communication Skills: ability to impart complex information to patients, relatives and carers, with different levels of understanding
- Level 2 Psychological Skills Training

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate individual to join an innovative role developed in partnership between King's College Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support. This role was created as part of a collaborative programme of service improvement, aimed at ensuring people affected by cancer receive an outstanding experience of care when they present acutely unwell.
Following a redesign of the Acute Oncology Service and expansion of the team, we are seeking an enthusiastic nurse to contribute to the continued development of this dynamic service and team.
A key focus is ensuring that patients receive timely specialist oncology assessment and input, facilitating appropriate management and investigation. The service aims to prevent avoidable hospital admission where appropriate, reduce inpatient length of stay and support the assessment and management of patients within an ambulatory or Same Day Emergency Care setting.
The AOS CNS will work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary Acute Oncology Team and alongside admitting clinical teams, providing expert advice and specialist clinical expertise.
