Role summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 3 Phlebotomist to join the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) partnership. The role involves providing a capillary blood sample collection service primarily at Sheffield Children's Hospital and Jessop Wing, as well as processing samples in Clinical Chemistry. The successful candidate will be part of a friendly, progressive, and innovative team, contributing to the transformation of pathology services across the region. Training opportunities are available to enhance skills and facilitate patient care.

Essential criteria

  • GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above or some laboratory experience
  • Willingness to complete an in-house competency package and additional skills training equivalent to A level/NVQ Level 3 or NVQ level 2 with recognised additional short courses (e.g. Venepuncture training, clinicalskills.net) or extensive experience in Phlebotomy/Venepuncture
  • Willingness to undertake training and competency assessment to perform clinical patient observations

Desirable criteria

  • Phlebotomy training course/ previous evidence of competence.
  • Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy
  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques/working with variety of venepuncture equipment or relevant transferrable experience in a clinical environment
  • Previous experience within the NHS.
  • Skills and Knowledge
  • Keyboard and basic IT skills
  • Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues
  • Effective Communication skills, written and oral
  • Evidence of effective time management skills and with a methodical approach
  • Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory training and required laboratory competences
  • Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work
  • Commitment to departmental shift patterns (including weekends bank holidays and out of hours) to enable effective service delivery.
  • Ability to travel across the SYB region to work at other sites and/or perform patient domiciliary visits
  • Education and Qualifications

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the phlebotomy service provided by South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) partnership. A Band 3 Phlebotomist is required to join the team currently providing a service to Sheffield Children's Hospital as well as to babies in the Jessop Wing of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Part of this role also includes the processing of samples in Clinical chemistry at Sheffield Children's Hospital:

  • To receive, sort and label laboratory specimens as required.
  • To be responsible for the accurate data entry into the Laboratory Computer I.T. System.
  • Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.
  • Store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures.
  • Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.
