Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Nuclear Medicine service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves rotational placements in adult and paediatric Nuclear Medicine and PET CT, working closely with a multidisciplinary team. The department actively encourages CPD and participates in clinical trials, utilising advanced imaging systems. We are seeking an innovative and enthusiastic Clinical Technologist/Radiographer to work at the forefront of diagnostic Nuclear Medicine, with comprehensive training provided for those with limited PET or Nuclear Medicine experience.
Key responsibilities
- Perform a wide range of diagnostic procedures on patients of all ages.
- Be actively involved in the preparation, dispensing, and administration of sterile radioactive materials.
- Acquire imaging data, analyse and calculate results, and dispose of radioactive waste material.
- Work unsupervised and provide direct and indirect supervision to more junior staff.
- Take an active role in organising the routine daily workload and liaise with other staff.
- Participate in rotational placements to the Birmingham PET centre, satellite unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital, and other sites, including occasional Saturday shifts.
Essential criteria
- * BSc Hons Radiography or equivalent/BSc Hons Clinical Technology or equivalent
- * Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent level of knowledge
- * Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD)
- * HCPC Registered Radiographer/Registered Clinical Technologist
- * Post qualification Nuclear Medicine Experience.
- * Has experience of nuclear medicine PET procedures and techniques.
- * Expected to carry out specialist procedures with highly complex equipment, adapting protocols where necessary.
- * Experience of working within a quality management system.
- * Demonstrates a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the hazards posed by and the precautions required when dealing with ionising radiation arising from sealed and unsealed radioactive sources and patients.
- * Has a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge of radiation protection issues and radioactive decontamination.
- * Has an understanding of patient, staff and public risks arising from radiation exposure.
- * Has knowledge of the underpinning legislation relating to nuclear medicine i.e, Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016, National Regulations for the Transport of Radioactive Substances, Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) guidelines.
- * Knowledge of the safe use of expensive and highly complex imaging, non-imaging and related equipment (>£50,000).
- * Has knowledge of an NHS working environment within the field of nuclear medicine.
- * Has a working knowledge of a range of specialist practice relating to:
- * The performance of a wide range of diagnostic non-imaging procedures.
- * The analysis of diagnostic imaging and non-imaging patient data using complex computer programs.
- * The performance of intravenous administration of a wide range of diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals.

Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the team within the Nuclear Medicine service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will have rotational placements that include adult and paediatric Nuclear Medicine and PET CT, working closely with the team of healthcare professionals. The department routinely participates in clinical trials. We have a dedicated on-site licensed Radiopharmacy unit providing a full range of diagnostic and therapy radiopharmaceuticals
CPD is actively encouraged with the opportunity to further your knowledge and experience by attending and presenting at conferences and seminars. We have 6 SPECT CT gamma cameras across sites including the Spectrum Dynamics Veriton 64slice CZT and the first in the world Siemens Symbia Pro-Specta X7 SPECT CT system. We are in the process of upgrading our PET Centre from 1 to 2 PET CT systems.
We are looking for someone to join a caring dedicated and supportive team interested in working at the forefront of diagnostic Nuclear Medicine. We welcome applications from innovative and enthusiastic Clinical Technologists/ Radiographers. Suitably motivated radiographer applicants with limited experience of PET or Nuclear Medicine are actively encouraged to apply for this post as comprehensive training will be given (this will be on an Annex 21 pay scale until trained).
