Role summary

This role is for a Medical Engineer within the Electronic and Bio-Medical Engineering department. The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplined team responsible for ensuring medical equipment operates effectively and safely. Key duties include calibrating, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of medical equipment, including life support and patient monitoring devices. The role involves working in clinical areas and liaising with medical and nursing staff to identify faults and perform repairs.

Key responsibilities

  • Use appropriate test equipment and take responsibility for its use and safety.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance to specified schedule.
  • Attend all wards/departments within the Trust and other organisations to perform equipment maintenance and non-schedule repairs.
  • Clarify all issues affecting required maintenance and their impact on clinical services.
  • Act on relevant safety notices received from the MHRA and assist with investigation of adverse incidents.

Essential criteria

  • Minimum BSc in Electronic/Mechanical Engineering or HND/C in Electronic/Mechanical Engineering +3 yrs post graduate engineering experience
  • A team player able to work well with others and demonstrate commitment to departmental objectives
  • A flexible approach to introduction of change in working practices

Desirable criteria

  • Post graduate Bio-Medical Engineering and physiological training
  • Attended manufacturer's courses on medical equipment maintenance
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic

Job summary

The post is one of a multi-disciplined team of technicians within the Electronic and Bio-Medical Engineering department concerned with the provision of services that are aimed at ensuring that medical equipment operates effectively and safely with the minimum of downtime. To calibrate and maintain medical equipment and devices for use in patient care.

The post holder provides support to various electrical, electronic, mechanical and oxygen therapy equipment which includes the planned preventative maintenance, repair, calibration and acceptance testing of a wide range of medical equipment, including life support, patient monitoring, patient therapy, diagnostic, ventilatory and anaesthetic equipment which at times will be 'patient connected'.

The post holder liaises with Consultant Medical and Nursing ward staff, associated Healthcare Professionals and technical staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in clinical areas with intermittent patient contact.
