Role summary
This role involves supporting individuals within the criminal justice system by providing practical assistance and redirecting them to meaningful activities and community services. The post holder will work in the community, undertaking short-term support tasks and helping clients attend appointments for various assessments and services. The aim is to increase access to healthcare, reduce health inequalities, and facilitate engagement with community services for vulnerable people involved in the criminal justice process.
Key responsibilities
- Work with vulnerable children, young people, and adults in contact with the youth and criminal justice systems.
- Provide practical support to clients to meet short-term objectives, such as registering with a GP or attending first appointments with partner agencies.
- Undertake lone working in the community under the supervision of Liaison and Diversion Practitioners.
- Increase access to and uptake of healthcare and relevant services for people involved in the criminal justice system.
- Reduce health inequalities for those involved in the criminal justice process.
- Provide advocacy and practical support, acting as a voice for individuals who struggle to engage.
Essential criteria
- To have NVQ Level 3 and/or care certificate in care (or equivalent) or willingness to work towards this.
- Experience of working with the public
- Previous experience working with service users who may have mental health difficulties, intellectual disabilities, autism, speech and language and communication needs, ADHD, acquired brain injury, personality disorder/trauma, and who may alcohol and substances as a way of coping
- Receptive to and able to use supervision appropriately
- Experience of the principles of recovery, person-centred planning, and safeguarding
- To understand mental health, learning disability, children and young people and substance misuse.
- Experience in a relevant care setting.
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to communicate at all levels
- Good literacy and numeric skills
- Good IT skills
- Ability to work in a demanding environment
- Able to transport patients and travel with them on public transport.
- To be able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the organisation
- Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, empathy, and compassion to the needs of service users.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to form short therapeutic relationships with clients and carers
- An understanding of the importance of client carer involvement
- Awareness of local services and community provision
- Ability to be able to travel across county to meet the needs of the service users
- Able to work occasional evenings and weekends subject to service demand.
- Post will be subject to police vetting
- Ability to travel independently around the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough area meeting required timescales. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential.
Desirable criteria
- Certificate in Mental Health Awards Framework, level 2, NVQ II or equivalent.
- Knowledge of current Mental Health Act
- Knowledge of benefit and employment services
- NVQ 1, 2 or 3 in health or social care or equivalent.
- Experience of working with people within the Youth and Criminal Justice systems
- Ability to motivate others
- Experience of NHS record keeping systems
- Ability to de-escalate a difficult situation
- Awareness of local partner agency resources
- Must be able to work as part of a team.

A Band 4 Support Time Recovery Worker position has arisen in the team and we are looking for a special individual to help with driving the supporting element of the service.
In addition to a DBS check, a police vetting check is required for this post. This is completed by Cambridgeshire Constabulary and is a thorough background and security screening which includes checks on Criminal Record and History, Financial Status, Personal Associations, Digital footprint and Residency.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as a part of a team that delivers support and services to individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system.
The post holder is primarily required to work in the community undertaking short term pieces of work with individuals referred to them by senior L&DS Practitioners.
