Role summary
This is a fixed-term Registered Band 5 Staff Nurse position on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) for 12 months, working 37.5 hours per week. The role involves delivering high standards of quality care in a fast-paced, 39-bedded short stay unit. You will be assessing, prioritising, and caring for patients with acute care needs, working 12-hour day and night shifts.
Key responsibilities
- Manage and provide all aspects of patient care.
- Admit, assess & escalate any concerns to nurse in charge.
- Assess NEWS score and effectively manage.
- Act in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct.
- Support other nurses in the ward team as necessary.
- Comply with infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
Essential criteria
- Registered nurse (adult) with active registration.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and potentially working towards or holding an MSc in nursing
- Experience in an acute hospital setting, demonstrating an awareness of current professional nursing issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to plan and organise workload.
- Ability to supervise qualified and unqualified staff
- Ability to prioritise and make decisions.
- Ability to work flexibly to provide 24 hour cover.
- Be a positive role model with the ability to demonstrate a credible and professional approach.

The acute medical unit is a fast paced, acute care environment; assessing, prioritising and caring for a multitude of patient and families, with specific acute care needs and long term conditions. AMU is a 39 bedded Short Stay Unit . We care for patients with acute care needs for up to 72 hrs and look after speciality patients until a bed becomes available in the appropriate area.
