Role summary
This role is for an experienced and motivated Chief Respiratory Physiologist to join the Lung Function service at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, implementing policies, maintaining clinical standards, and contributing to service improvement. The position involves supporting colleagues, providing training, and contributing to service development projects. It is a fixed-term, full-time role for 12 months.
Key responsibilities
- Perform unsupervised, all routine techniques within the lung function laboratory, including Spirometry, FeNO, lung volumes, TLco, plethysmography and reversibility testing.
- Perform unsupervised complex procedures such as Histamine challenge, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, respiratory muscle assessment, fitness to fly assessment, sleep studies, long term oxygen assessment and Capillary blood gasses.
- Ensure data quality by undertaking equipment calibration and quality control for all tests performed within the laboratory and ensure technical quality complies with national guidelines.
- Act as an expert Physiologist, managing complex patient situations empathetically and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical obligations.
- Provide CPAP provision (caseload over 3000 patients) and support for those on Bi-level ventilation.
- Provide technical and clinical advice on diagnostic measurements to Multi-disciplinary clinical teams and deliver expert training and education to AHPs, GPs, Consultants and voluntary agencies.
Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) in Respiratory physiology or equivalent ARTP accreditation
- Registration with AHCS Masters in physiology or relevant field or equivalent experience gained through undertaken physiology roles
- Excellent organisation and prioritisation skills including ability to work to deadlines
- Experience of research and audit together with presentation skills
- Good interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication including report writing and explaining complex information
- Ability to deal sensitively and courteously with patients, visitors and staff
- Ability to build effective relationships with a range of clinical and non-clinical staff
- Minimum of four years post registration experience on NHS band 6 level in respiratory physiology.
- Management and development of clinical protocols
- Knowledge and experience of delivering therapeutic CPAP and sleep clinics
- Experience of teaching / mentoring staff.
- Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues
- Understanding and demonstration of the Trust Values
- Commitment and adherence to equality, diversity and inclusion
Desirable criteria
- ECDL qualification Training and assessment qualification
- ARTP 1 and 2 certificates Management Qualification
- Experience performing full Polysomongraphy studies
- Project management skills
- Research skills
- Leadership skills
- Experience of managing conflict and resolving complaints
- EPR knowledge
- Knowledge of NHS performance requirements
