Role summary

This role is for an Assistant Psychologist within the Aspiring Clinical Psychologists Access Scheme, funded by NHS England. It offers paid work experience across inpatient NICU, Major Trauma, and Complex Rehabilitation specialities. The post holder will support patient assessment and psychological support under supervision, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and participate in research and audit activities. This scheme aims to provide opportunities for recent psychology graduates who are underrepresented in the profession and have faced barriers to unpaid work experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to high-quality patient care within various specialities.
  • Support assessment of patients and offer psychological support under the supervision of a clinical psychologist.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in research and audit activities where required.
  • Adhere to Trust and departmental policies and remain updated on service and professional standards.

Essential criteria

  • BSc (Hons) 2:1 or above in Psychology Or BPS accredited conversion course
  • Graduate membership of the BPS
  • Meets criteria for Aspiring Clinical Psychologists Access Scheme
  • An understanding of working in a health care setting
  • Understanding of MDT working
  • Understanding of psychometric assessment and statistical analysis
  • Skills in communication, teaching/presenting, managing challenging behaviour and clinical assessment
  • Experience of working within team environments (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Ability to manage own work timetable
  • Ability to manage stress generated by work and work environment and to reflect on these processes (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Well motivated with respect to developing clinical and academic skills, with evidence of continued professional development.
  • Ability to develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings, with evidence of competency in the use of Microsoft office; Powerpoint and Excel.
  • Enthusiasm for a broad range of psychological phenomena and interest in models of service delivery, with the ability to articulate the value added by clinical psychology services within the context of the multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work flexibly within a multi-disciplinary context and within an acute healthcare environment. (with example and expansion provided in application)

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with patients with long-term health conditions (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Experience of working with behaviours that can present challenges to services (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Experience of using CBT informed ideas for individual based therapy (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Knowledge of risk assessment processes
  • Specialised training / knowledge in management of challenging behavior.
  • Experience of planning and co-facilitating therapeutic groups.
  • Research experience
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and implications for clinical practice. (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Relevant additional training, E.g. managing stress at work; clinical supervision
  • Experience of working within a stressful environment with challenging patients
  • Holds IT qualification, such as ECDL
  • Experience of using electronic patient databases i.e Lorenzo (with example and expansion provided in application)
  • Experience of working within a multicultural framework
  • Previous NHS experience (with example and expansion provided in application)

Job summary

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has secured funding from NHS England to provide paid assistant psychologist experience within the Aspiring Clinical Psychologists Access Scheme. This schemeaims to provide work experience opportunities to recent psychology graduates that would otherwise be excluded from entering the profession through unpaid roles.

There are currently 3 posts available, working across our inpatient NICU, Major Trauma and Complex Rehabilitation specialities. To qualify, we encourage applications from individuals who:

  • Graduated within the last 2 years with a psychology undergraduate degree (minimum 2:1)
  • Are under represented in the clinical psychology profession, encouraging diversity
  • Have been excluded from unpaid work experience due to additional responsibilities (e.g. being a carer)
  • Have had less support to further their education (e.g. first generation in your family to go to university

You must not :

  • Have a history of paid assistant psychologist experience
  • Be salaried or a post graduate trainee within a university
  • Be studying or have completed a master's degree (with the exception of an accredited conversion degree OR a combined undergraduate MSci degree, on the basis that the financial position is
