Role summary
This role is for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join the AHP team in the Inpatient Mental Health Service. The post involves providing intervention for adults with communication needs or eating, drinking, and swallowing (EDS) difficulties related to mental health conditions, neurological impairment, or autism. The successful candidate will be hospital-based, working closely with a multidisciplinary team, and will require post-graduate qualification and competence in dysphagia. It offers opportunities for supervision and continuous professional development.
Key responsibilities
- Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including caseload management and direct clinical care.
- Triage referrals, carry out comprehensive assessments, and interpret clinical information to develop appropriate EDS and communication treatment plans.
- Formulate and deliver individual treatment programmes based on specialist knowledge, evidence-based practice, and national/local guidelines.
- Work with patients and carers to identify and formulate client-centred goals, demonstrating ongoing evaluation of client progress.
- Contribute to multi-agency working meetings to share information and plan patient/client care.
Essential criteria
- BSC Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Unrestricted registration with Health Professions Council (HCPC)
- Evidence of ongoing training and relevant post graduate courses
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- An understanding of how Speech and Language Therapy contributes to service provision for patients in the acute mental health setting
- Demonstrates ability to work as part of a team, with good organisational and leadership skills
- Demonstrates knowledge of person- centred, recovery-focussed practice
- Experience working with clients with mental health conditions or autism
- Experience and competence working with clients with complex communication needs and/or challenging behaviour
- Experience or interest in working in acute mental health services
- Evidence of effective caseload management
- Experience of supervising qualified and/or unqualified staff
- Experience of working as part of an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary team
- Familiar with a range of therapeutic interventions

Job summary
We are looking for an experienced Speech and Language to join our dynamic AHP team working in the Inpatient Mental Health Service. The post is to provide intervention for adults who have communication needs or EDS difficulties related to their mental health condition, acquired neurological impairment or autism.
The role requires post graduate qualification and competence in dysphagia. It would suit someone with the patience, compassion and creativity to engage this client group in the assessment and intervention process, supporting people to participate as best they can in their recovery. The job can be challenging but fun and the ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, resilient and have a good sense of humour.
The post is hospital-based and involves close MDT working, providing opportunity for development of knowledge and skills around this complex and varied client group.
Opportunities exist for supervisions and CPD, with training and development available to enhance knowledge, skills and confidence in working with this client group.
