Role summary
This role involves leading and managing the Haygarth Gastroenterology Ward, ensuring high-quality, patient-centred care. The Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will provide clinical leadership, manage ward operations, and foster a positive culture. Key responsibilities
- Provide visible, compassionate leadership and promote a positive, patient-centred culture.
- Manage the day-to-day operational running of the ward, including patient flow, staffing, rostering and workforce deployment.
- Ensure the delivery of safe, effective, evidence-based care in line with Trust and national standards.
- Lead investigations into incidents, complaints and concerns, embedding learning and improvements into practice.
- Ensure compliance with mandatory training, professional standards, policies and clinical governance.
- Lead audits, implement action plans and oversee continuous service improvement.
Essential criteria
- State Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council
- Demonstrates evidence of on-going continuous professional development.
- Degree level qualification
- Experience in Managing Conduct., Health, Sickness & Performance, Recruitment & Selection, Appraisal etc
- Experience of leadership within a acute setting
- Significant relevant clinical and management experience at band 6 or above
- Strong clinical knowledge and experience within acute adult nursing.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- A commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
- The ability to inspire, motivate, and support teams through periods of operational pressure.
- Show a proactive approach to continuous improvement and workforce development.
- Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice, particularly within speciality area and the application of this in practice.
- Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and requirements of it for the practice & behaviour and its application to the management of staff and self
- Understanding of the principles and application of effective staff / HR management
- Evidence of involvement in service users' advocacy and complaints resolution.

- Highly effective communication skills - able to communicate verbally and written to staff, patients and relatives including in situations of conflict & distress, ensuring that communication is tailored to the person being addressed.
- Able to lead and manage all Registered Nurses, HCAs and students within ward / unit effectively through effective standard-setting, monitoring, feedback, appraisal, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
- Able to apply understanding of equality & diversity to management of own staff
- Able to manage change effectively, with assistance from HR, Senior Nurse etc. in line with Trust policy, influencing staff to make changes / improvements.
- Able to demonstrate effective budgeting practice, exercising care and economy, supported by appropriate documentation.
- Able to appraise staff effectively in line with Trust Appraisal Policy.
Desirable criteria
- Post-registration qualification preferably in Gastroenterology
- Previous experience as a band 7 Senior Sister/charge nurse
- educated to masters level or working towards it
- Experience of managing staffing, performance, quality indicators, and clinical governance.

The Senior Sister/Charge Nurse is responsible for the operational management and clinical leadership of Haygarth Gastroenterology Ward, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, patient-centred care.
