Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Band 6 practitioner to join the Ambulatory Wound Care and Lymphoedema Service. The role involves delivering specialist lymphoedema care, providing clinical leadership, supervision, and guidance to Band 5 staff. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating care for patients with lymphoedema, chronic oedema, and lipoedema, including those with cancer and palliative care conditions. The post holder will manage an independent caseload in community clinics and patients' homes, contributing to service development, clinical governance, and audit. Education and training for patients, carers, and healthcare professionals are also key aspects of the role.
Key responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of adult patients with all types of Lymphoedema using specialist skills and evidence-based, patient-centred approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care.
- Provide specialist support to the AWC nurse-led clinics and community nursing teams in Sheffield, ensuring a high standard of care.
- Prescribe in line with the wound care formulary and ensure nurse prescribing is undertaken in a safe, cost-effective and evidence-based manner.
- Provide support to the workforce with appraisals, clinical supervision, audit, education, learning and development.
- Assist with planning, evaluation, and development of services, contributing to service improvement projects.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team working and have an active role in joint clinics and home visits.
Essential criteria
- Diploma/Degree in nursing / physiotherapy / occupational therapy from recognised training establishments.
- Current registration from the relevant professional body.
- Demonstrate commitment to continuous Professional Development via personal development plans/file.
- Certificate in lymphoedema management incorporating intensive therapy, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), MLLB or a willingness to undertake. The successful candidate will also be required to do regular updates in lymphoedema management.
- Non-Medical Prescriber or a willingness to undertake.
- First line management / Leadership course at post graduate level. Or a willingness to undertake.
- Significant post graduate experience.
- Experienced in the application of evidence-based practise.
- Experience of supervising / managing / developing junior staff through appraisals and teaching.
- Experience at working in collaboration with other health care professionals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work autonomously under pressure and priorities.
- To have highly developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills of motivation, explanation and reassurance to agree and gain co-operation of patients and carers in their treatment programmes.
- Organisational skills to manage yourself and other supervised staff to contribute to service delivery.
- Computer Literate with excellent written and oral presentation skills.
- Ability to pass on skills/ knowledge to others within both formal and informal environments.
- Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within the team and key external teams on the patient pathway.
- Ability to understand and respect different points of view and work with people from a variety of cultures.
- To have developed coping strategies to deal with the emotional nature and demands of the work.
- Detailed knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and its application.
- Knowledge of the local and National priorities for Lymphoedema, NHS structures, National strategies and commissioning.
- Thorough knowledge Professional Code of Conduct.
- Ability to gain and share knowledge.
- Ability to motivate self and problem solve.
- Perceptive / visionary /versatile and with lateral thinking qualities.
- Supportive and empathic nature.
- A working knowledge of the needs of patients with lymphoedema/chronic oedema.
- A working knowledge of patients with cancer / palliative care.
- It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner or able to use a car for work purposes.
Desirable criteria
- Previous project involvement.
- Previous experience at Specialist Band 6 level.
- Lymphoedema/Chronic Oedema and / or Leg Ulcer Management experience.
- Experience of involvement in service development.
- Involvement in practice development, audit and research application.
- Knowledge of standards and guidelines relating to lymphoedema and leg ulcer management.
