Role summary
This role involves providing emotional support and practical guidance to individuals accessing the Sheffield Gender Identity Clinic, drawing upon your own lived experience of gender identity. You will help service users identify their strengths, values, and aspirations, working individually and in groups. Key responsibilities
- Draw upon lived experience to enhance approaches offered to clients using gender identity services.
- Support individuals in their personal journey by helping them identify strengths, values, and aspirations.
- Work closely with colleagues as part of the multi-disciplinary team supporting clients.
- Provide peer support approaches and manage an effective caseload under supervision.
- Co-produce and facilitate therapeutic groups for service users.
- Co-produce and deliver training.
Essential criteria
- Lived experience of gender dysphoria/gender variance or gender nonconformity
- Either or both of: Experience of transitioning from u18 to adult Gender services, OR: A trans masculine background.
- Direct experience of using an adult Gender Identity Clinic within England and ability to use this experience positively in the role and be willing and able to share one's own personal journey to help others.
- Good level of understanding of the provision of gender identity clinic pathways and the NHS as a whole
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, verbal and written skills.
- Good IT skills, including some knowledge of and skills in the use of Microsoft Office software programs, e.g. Word, Outlook, PowerPoint
- Knowledge of the philosophy and principles of co-production and service user and carer led initiatives.
- Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team

Job summary
The Sheffield Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is one of seven specialist services (in addition to further pilot Trans health-services) supporting people who are troubled by their experience of gender identity and its expression, often conflicting with expected social norms of their assigned gender. The service is based at Michael Carlisle Centre in Sheffield. The service is nationally commissioned by NHS England. The service receives referrals from the geographical area covered by NHS England.
Using your own lived experience of gender identity, the post holder will offer emotional support and practical guidance to those people who wish to access the service and to those beginning their journey of transition on the care pathway. The role of peer support will help individuals to gain the maximum benefit from their experience with the clinic.
You will have the desire and passion to improve the quality of life for people in all aspects of their lives which may have been affected by their experience of gender dysphoria.
